Lawrence Phillips Obituary

PHILLIPS, Lawrence "Larry" Truman, lived a long, rich life. Known to so many in the Richmond area, he was a man of eternal optimism and good will towards others. His bright, enthusiastic personality was infectious, and he knew no strangers. Always one to be helping others, he delighted in being able to be THE Man for every situation. His work ethic was incomparable – from his military service, work at Shoney's, real estate activities, volunteerism (Optimists, U.S. Coast Guard, Knights of Columbus, etc.) and Father, he was the epitome of dedication.

Born in 1934, Larry graduated from Benedictine High School in Richmond, Va. in 1952. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was sent to Korea shortly thereafter. Upon his Honorable Discharge from the Marines Corps in 1954, he married the love of his life, Patricia "Pat" Brady and established their home in Richmond, Va. Over the next 12 years, Pat and Larry became the proud parents of six children. He started his professional career working for the Shoney's Corporation and worked tirelessly for 20 years at all the Shoney's in the Richmond area. In 1976, he and Pat moved the family to Hendersonville, Tenn., before eventually returning to Richmond and the community he loved. After settling back in Richmond, he made the move to real estate, working as a realtor, later becoming a broker and working with various with firms in the Richmond area.

Larry instilled in his children the importance of devotion to duty and the desire to share your talents with others. He was a devoted Catholic, faithfully attending and serving many roles at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lakeside. He served as President of the Optimist Club, within the Knights of Columbus, he was Grand Knight of his Council, and Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree.

Larry leaves behind his devoted wife of 68 years; his children; Karin Walker (Rick), Larry, Mary Frances Zacharias, Tracy Campbell (Thom), Billy and David. He also leaves 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 8200 Woodman Road, Henrico, Va. at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 6. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Our Lady of Lourdes School building fund, 8200 Woodman Road, Henrico, Va. 23228.

Pat, we are so sorry to hear of Larry´s passing. Larry never failed to make us laugh. He had so many works in the Church and with Knights of Columbus. He also started the "Fish Fries" and brought so much fellowship to Lourdes. We send our prayers and love!

Dear Pat,
I just now heard about Larry's passing. Am so sorry that I did not know in time to be at mass this morning. So many great memories of our times at St. Bridget's when our children were little. Remember CFM and our bulletin boards etc.! Larry was so helpful to George with real estate--"two birds if a feather"
I send my love and my prayers.

Larry and Pat were great friends and supporters of my mother. They met at a community and assisted her in participating in activities and mass. We the family are forever appreciative of your outreach. Larry will be missed.

Thanks to you Larry I have been able to include "Table Pad Saleswoman". It was at a time when Google wasn't around for directions! I had to look up directions, right them down and hope I could get there. You see I'm a little directionally challenged..to say the least! Thanks for these memories and stories to be told from them!

My family and I were Blessed to become "Family" with Larry and Pat and their children when we moved to Richmond´ many years ago. They adopted us and included us their many adventures.
Through them, I learned that it doesn´t take Blood to make Family, only Love
I shall miss Larry T, he was one of a kind!
Pat we will always be Sisters of Soul. I Love You

Dear Pat and family,
My memories of Richmond include those of Our Lady of Lourdes and the wonderful "family feel" it had during the 70s. You, Larry and the kids were always such a part of everything. Sending my condolences and prayers to you all along with those of my children Jeanne and John. Sincerely Pam Allen Manus
