Lawrence Saul Obituary

SAUL, Lawrence Arnold, 81, of Midlothian, Virginia, and formerly of Blacksburg, Virginia, passed away on October 24, 2022.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church. Visitation and Celebration of Life will be held in the parish hall following the service. Burial will be private with full military honors.

Arnold was born in Franklin County, Virginia. He graduated from Franklin County High School and upon graduation, enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was stationed on the Oregon coast, thus beginning a lifelong love of Oregon.

Arnold was married to Audrey in 1965 and they remained newlyweds for 57 years.

Arnold began a career with IBM, working on advanced computer mainframes and graduating from the IBM Customer Engineering Class of 1963. Always a gadget, technology and computer-savvy man, he retired from IBM in 1996 to continue his computer hobby working with Virginia Tech Computing Center. He enjoyed his family first and foremost, his lifelong Empty Nester Group friends, fishing, walking, pranks, Holden Beach trips, tinkering in his Midlothian neighborhood with friends, and participating in church outreach and Sunday school.

He was also actively involved in Blacksburg Baptist Church and upon relocation to Midlothian in 2011, Mt. Pisgah UMC.

Arnold is lovingly survived by his wife, Audrey; sons, Andy (Rebecca) and Alan (Emily); and "all those boys," grandsons, Andrew, James, Waverly, William and Wyatt; and other family and friends.

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, Penn and Augusta Saul.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to The Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute or Mt. Pisgah UMC. Arnold's family wishes to thank the amazing healthcare workers at Johnston-Willis Hospital and Hospice of Virginia.

I remember one Saturday morning Arnold and I were working on a main frame computer in Lynchburg. We were talking about what to do next. Arnold had his left hand resting on a gate in the computer. Suddenly he jerked his hand away. The birdie finger had a burn blister on it. We fixed the computer because of that blister. After that I teased Arnold he didn't meters of oscilloscopes to fix computers just point his birdie finger at it.

I am saddened to read of Arnie's passing. Such a sweet, kind man. His love of computers was evident at the computing center so this love being referred to as a 'hobby' was very appropriate. The sharing of his knowledge and experiences was just Arnie, being Arnie. Condolences to Audrey, sons and extended family and friends. He led by example.
