Lawrence Zacharias Obituary
ZACHARIAS, M.D., Dr. Lawrence Coleman, (Larry), age 93, went to be with almighty God and his Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 3rd, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oswald E. Zacharias, Jr., and Madge Dixson Zacharias. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 40 years, Jacquelyn Reynolds Zacharias. He additionally was preceded in death by his second wife, Joyce Funai Lovelace Zacharias, and his brother, Dr. Charles M. Zacharias, MD.
He is survived by his daughters Jacquelyn M. Zacharias (David) and Elizabeth Zacharias Gardner (Roderick), his son Lawrence C. Zacharias Jr (Wendy), and one stepson, Ralph Lovelace (Carol) as well as his grandchildren Mathew Zacharias (Carli), Morgan Zacharias Wainscott (James), Kelly Meehan (Cory), Patrick Meehan (Valerie), Tabb Gardner, Hunter Gardner, Abby Lovelace, Carter Lovelace as well as his several great-grandchildren.
Dr. Zacharias was a graduate of John Marshall High School (1948), the University of Richmond (1952), and the Medical College of Virginia (1956). He was in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1959 and after trained in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He practiced Internal Medicine with his brother until his brother's death in 1979, later joining Medical Specialist in 1988. He retired from practice in 1997.
During his time as a physician, he was very active on the staff of Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital including being Chief of Medicine, President (four years), and a member of the Executive Committee (13 years). He was a member of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, The Medical Society of Virginia, and the American Medical Association.
He was a former member of the Board of Catholic Families and Children's Services (now Catholic Charities) and was also a former member of the Board of Visitors for Benedictine High School.
Dr. Zacharias was most interested in his patients and their families and enjoyed the practice of medicine, which included being physician for the Sisters of the Visitation where he felt it was a privilege to look after them for over 50 years. As team physician for the University of Richmond from 1971 until 1993, you would often find him standing on the sidelines of the football games or in the stands of the Robins Center for basketball. In 2009, he was inducted into the Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame for his many years of care and service to the teams. Go Spiders!
Anyone who knew Larry knew he loved to play golf. He was a long-time member of the Country Club of Virginia and a former member of the Princess Ann Country Club as well as being a member of the Bogies and the 55 Golf Association. He enjoyed many golf trips with his friends to Yeaman's Hall in Charleston, SC as well as golf trips to Scotland, Ireland, Hawaii, and Treasure Key, Bahamas.
Along with parts of his summers spent in Virginia Beach, it was his home at Sandy Point on the Potomac River was where he loved to spend time from when he was a teenager to an adult with his family. Along with fishing, he enjoyed hunting and spent many years traveling to South Dakota to hunt pheasants. These were the places where he spent great times with his family and his many friends, enjoying a good joke, a good drink and creating many wonderful memories and laughs.
He loved his religion and being a devout Catholic. He was a member of St. Bridget's Church since its opening in 1950. It was often he remarked how his faith carried him through happy times and sad, giving him strength throughout.
His remains are at Bliley's Funeral Home on Augusta Avenue, Richmond, VA with a Visitation to be held Thursday, May 9th from 4 to 6:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, May 10th at St. Bridget's Church at 6006 Three Chopt Road, Richmond, with a reception following at the Country Club of Virginia Westhampton location on 6031 Saint Andrews Lane, Richmond. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Benedictine Schools of Richmond.
Dr. Zacharias' family wants to thank the wonderful staff and residents at St. Mary's Woods for the care and friendships that buoyed him and us these past two and a half years. We are forever grateful for the time we had with dad which would not have been without your help in looking after our beloved father.
