Louise Settle Obituary

Louise Douglas Smyth Settle, known for a sense of purpose and a sense of humor, died Saturday evening, April 12, 2003, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She lived in Pulaski at 2221 Pleasant Hill Drive and was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Robert Settle. Louise was born in Russell County, Virginia, on September 13, 1915, to Mary Douglas Howard Smyth and Blythe Deems Smyth. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Blythe Robert Smyth and James Myron Smyth, and one sister, Mary Sue Royall. Louise was a lifelong Democrat who knew presidents and many state officials; she was honored for her service at the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in Richmond in 1998. She was active in the Red Cross during World War II when her husband was in European and Pacific operations. Mrs. Settle was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pulaski as well as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Always interested in civic affairs, she served on the New River Planning District Commission for 20 years. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Trigg Smyth of Johnson City, Tenn.; her nieces, Susan Whittaker and husband, Randall Whittaker of Tazewell, Va., Patricia Smyth and husband, Bruce Arrowood of Atlanta, Va., Deborah Smyth of Johnson City, Tenn., and Jamie Smyth of Abingdon, Va. Great-nieces and great-nephews include Mary Blythe McPherson and husband, Graham and children, Andrew and Luke of Chattanooga, Tenn., Matthew Whittaker and wife, Chelsa and daughter, Abigail of Abingdon, Va., Patrick Smyth-Arrowood of Atlanta, Ga.; Lily Marysa Smyth Gibson and Michael Smyth Gibson of Johnson City, Tenn., and Lindsay Smyth Kirschner of Abingdon, Va. Louise is also survived by her goddaughter, Laura Martin of Alexandria, Va.; and a very special friend, Linda Eanes of Pulaski, Va. A memorial graveside service will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Russell Memorial Cemetery, Lebanon, Va., with the Reverend Dr. Randy Frye officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be made to the First Methodist Church, 135 4th Street N.W., Pulaski, Va. 24301 or to your favorite charity. Friends may contact family at the homes of the nieces, Susan Whittaker, Rt. 1 Box 662, Tazewell, Va. 24651 and/or Patricia Smyth, 301 Mariner Circle, Woodstock, Ga. 30189.
