Malcolm Christian Obituary

CHRISTIAN, Malcolm MacCleoud, better known as "Mac," died peacefully on September 6, 2023. Mac was born in Richmond, Virginia on April 4, 1924. He was preceded in death by his parents Horace Berkeley and Elizabeth Wilson Christian; and his older siblings, Horace Berkeley Christian Jr. and Jean Govier Christian Sells. Mac graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School where he met and later married his wife of 76 years, Jacqueline Rady Christian. Mac enlisted in the U.S. Army to join his countrymen in World War II. He was part of the 1123rd Engineer Combat Group and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.

Following the war, Mac studied at the University of Virginia where he received his B.S. in Commerce and an LLB from the Law School. Mac practiced law for nearly 70 years in Charlottesville and Richmond. He was a member of the Virginia Bar and President of the Richmond Bar Association. The Richmond Bar Association awarded Mac the Hunter W. Martin Professionalism Award for his service and commitment to high ethical standards and distinguished professional conduct in 2005.

He was an enthusiastic and dedicated member of his community. He was an active member of the West Richmond Businessmen's Association, the Kiwanis Club, the Boy Scouts of America, the Richmond Cotillion, and the Sleepy Hollow Civic Association. Mac believed firmly in the power of education and served many years on the Henrico County School Board as delegate, Vice Chair, and Chairman. He was also a member of the Sons of the Revolution like his father. Mac was a member of Order of Constantine and the Board of Trustees of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Mac was a man of deep faith and served the Episcopal Church throughout his life. He sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, was a lay reader, served on the Vestry, led the Endowment Committee, and served as Senior Warden.

His fondest pastime was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren at the family farm.

Mac is survived by his beloved wife "Jackie"; and their children, Malcolm MacCleoud Christian Jr. (Mary Ann), William Rady Christian, and Elizabeth Christian Miller. He is also survived by four grandchildren, William Thomas Christian (Rebecca), Lauren Christian Redfern (Pierce), Elizabeth Berkeley Miller, and Christian Paul Miller; as well as four great-grandchildren, James Brahaney Christian, Palmer Christian Redfern, Thomas Woods Christian, and Hendley MacCleoud Redfern.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, September 22 at 2 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 8787 River Road, Richmond, VA 23229. The family would like to thank the staff and care team at Westminster Canterbury Richmond for their competent, compassionate, and loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, Sigma Chi Foundation (sigmachi.org/foundation), or a charity of your choice.

Mac and his family and our family lived in the same neighborhood, loved and participated in BSA, and attended All Saints Church for years. He was such a treasure to his community. I will hold many wonderful memories in my heart, Jackie, and send you and the family much love.
My sympathy,
Dottie Figg

Dear Beth, Bill and Mike,
I am so sorry to hear of your father's passing. I never knew a finer gentleman. Thoughtful. Kind. Understated. Wise. Giving.
Please give my best to your mother.
