Marcel Cornis-Pop Obituary

Dr. Marcel Cornis-Pop, distinguished Professor of English and Media Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University and internationally renowned literary critic and theorist, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025. He was 79.

Born in Arad, Romania, Dr. Cornis-Pop began his academic journey at the University of Cluj, earning his M.A. in English and American Literature in 1968. He completed his Ph.D. magna cum laude in American and Comparative Literature at the University of Timisoara in 1979, with a dissertation on Herman Melville and Thomas Wolfe that would later become his acclaimed book "Anatomy of the White Whale".

His early career at the University of Timisoara was marked by both scholarly excellence and principled resistance to communist censorship. In 1973, his volume "Criticism and Symptomatology" was refused publication for its treatment of official writers, and in 1975 he was forced to abandon his literary criticism column. These experiences of intellectual suppression would later inform his deep commitment to academic freedom.

In 1983, Dr. Cornis-Pop received a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Northern Iowa, marking the beginning of a distinguished American academic career spanning over four decades. He served as a Mellon Fellow at Harvard University and ultimately became Professor of English and Media Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he chaired the English Department from 2000-2006 and founded the innovative Ph.D. program in Media, Art, and Text.

His scholarly contributions were monumental. Together with John Neubauer, he co-edited the four-volume "History of the Literary Cultures of East Central Europe" (2004-2010), a groundbreaking work that redefined comparative literary studies. His other major works include "Hermeneutic Desire and Critical Rewriting" (1992), "Narrative Innovation and Cultural Rewriting in the Cold War Era and After" (2001), and "New Literary Hybrids in the Age of Multimedia Expression" (2014).

As a translator, Dr. Cornis-Pop brought major American works to Romanian readers, including J.D. Salinger's "Nine Stories," Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," and Thomas Wolfe's "Look Homeward, Angel." His translations earned him the Romanian Writers' Union Award in 1975.

His numerous honors included election to the Academia Europaea (2012), the Phoenix Award for Editorial Achievement (1996), and VCU's Award of Excellence (2007). He served as President of the Coordinating Publication Committee of the International Comparative Literature Association and as editor of The Comparatist Journal.

Dr. Cornis-Pop's work opened new pathways for understanding literature across cultures and continues to influence scholars worldwide. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
