Margaret Daniel Obituary

Margaret Anne Daniel

June 30, 1927 - February 18, 2025

Margaret Daniel died on February 18, 2025. Born on Fines Creek, North Carolina in 1927, she was the first daughter in a family of eight children. Margaret went to Appalachian State Teachers' College and accepted a job in 1949 as professor of biology at Virginia Intermont College, where she met a young history professor named W. Harrison Daniel. They married and moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1956, when he began teaching at the University of Richmond. Margaret taught biology, botany, and genetics at St. Catherine's, the Medical College of Virginia, and The Collegiate Schools for the next thirty-five years. She and Harrison had one child, their daughter Anne Margaret, in 1963. After her husband's death in 2013, Margaret continued to live in Richmond, first at home and then at Sunrise of Richmond, until 2024, when she moved to Massachusetts. She continued to give lessons in the art of making tatted lace until she was in her early 90s. Margaret is survived by Anne Margaret, her son-in-law James Pethica and his daughter Elinor; her sister Cenie Rogers of Crabtree, NC; many nieces and nephews and their families; and a legion of former students who went on to careers in medicine and science. Her bright and inquiring spirit, concern for others, and gift of storytelling remain in their memories. A memorial service for Margaret will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2025 at 3 p.m. at Cannon Memorial Chapel, University of Richmond. Donations in her memory may be made to the Margaret Daniel Senior Science Award at The Collegiate Schools, Richmond, VA; to the Haywood Christian Ministry of Haywood County, NC; and to the Friends of Haywood County Animal Shelter, Haywood County, NC.
