Marshall Gordon Obituary

Marshall E. Gordon, 51, of Richmond, died Friday, January 13, 2006, after a 25 year battle with Hodgkins lymphoma and its after-effects. Throughout it all he showed remarkable courage and forbearance. Until recent years, Marshall worked principally in the banking industry, serving at one time as the Chief Executive Officer of the McGuire V.A. Federal Credit Union. In earlier years, he was a very successful volunteer coach of baseball, basketball, and football teams at the Jewish Community Center. He was a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers. Love of family was his most important value. He is survived by his mother, Anne C. Gordon; brother, Jeffrey, and sister-in-law, Jessica Lane of New York City; aunts, Helen Dobken and Foy Wiley; many cousins, including Barbara Cafarella, Jeffrey and Lusia Harrison of New York, Joey Clayman, Myrna Dobken of New York, and Stephen Gould of Atlanta. He is also survived by dear friends, especially his housemate, Stuart Davis, and Tom Mitchell, Stan Williams, Tom Godwin, and Howard Weinberg. A funeral service will be held 12:30 Sunday at the Bliley Funeral Homes' Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Interment Workman's Circle Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Virginia or a charity of your choice.

My name is Hunter Mills and I met Marshall when I was 16. Marshall and I were roomates in the fan and at Monroe Park towers when we were attending VCU. Marshall was a great support to me through the end of my teens and thourgh college. He helped me get through some very difficult times. We had a falling out, due to my stupidity, but later, Marshall was nice enough to accept my apology. I haven't spoken with Marshall in several years, but I have thought of him often, and I will always remember the good times we had, working bingo at the JCC, the many meals we shared, and the great conversations we had. Marshall was a true mentor for me. I will never forget him. I would very much like to speak with Stuart or Tom to share memories. If someone could contact me I would greatly appreciate it.

I had the priviledge of working with and getting to know Marshall in 1998 and 1999 when we were both employed by Dillard's at Virginia Center Commons in Glen Allen. Both of us were trying to adjust to life changes brought on by illness. We shared many talks during that time. In recent years we lost touch with each other, but the last time I saw Marshall he was getting his 7 ups, at Ukrop's and heading to a ball game with his friends.

Words are never adequate when someone you love dies at such a young age, but perhaps his laughter and his smile will be the memories that stay with you.

With sincere sympathy to Marshall's family, and to his close friends who always meant so much to him.

To the loving family and dear friends of my cousin, Marshall, I send my deepest sympathy. He will be missed by us all.

I am so pleased that I got to know him better these last few winters when he came to Florida. He really loved Florida. I've been waiing for him to come back!

I will visit his favorite delis and smile sadly and remember how much he loved to go out and eat with family and friends.

His relationship with his mother was beautiful to observe, and Jeffrey has been the best big brother one could ever have and Marshall knew that.

He trusted me and I will be forever grateful.

Rest in peace, dear cousin. I miss you. My deep regrets for not coming to Richmond to see you...

I will always love you.

With my deep sympathy to his loving family and friends:

I enjoyed seeing him on his trips to Florida

and spending a little time with him – getting to know him better.

May memories of happier times help you through this difficult time.

I'm sorry I could not come to the funeral -- my thoughts are with you.

Dearest Anne, Jeffrey, Jessica, and all my other Richmond Gordon relatives, I am thinking of you at this sad time. My one consolation is that I was able to see Marshall just a few months ago, and spend a wonderful evening with him here in New York. Love, Esther
