Dr. Mathias Rissi

Dr. Mathias Rissi, 85, of Charlotte, North Carolina, formerly of Richmond, Virginia died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at Sharon Towers Healthcare Center. Born in Weinacht, Switzerland on September 29, 1920, Mathias was the son of the late Mathias and Fanny Tobler Rissi. He received his education from the University of Zurich and the University of Basel. In 1951 Dr. Rissi received his Doctorate in Theology. While residing in Switzerland he served as pastor to five parishes of the Reformed Church of Switzerland and lectured at the University of Basel. In 1963, Mathias moved to Richmond, Virginia. A Professor of the New Testament, Dr. Rissi taught from 1963 to 1987 at the Union Theological Seminary. Following his retirement in 1987, Dr. Rissi moved to Deer Isle, Maine where he resided until moving to Charlotte in 2003. He was preceded in death by his wife, Veronika in 2002. Dr. Rissi is survived by his four sons, Mark, Daniel, John and Peter Rissi; a brother, Rene Rissi; and four grandchildren. Service and interment will take place in Bangor, Maine. The family would like to thank the staff of the second floor Healthcare for the compassion and care shown to Dr. Rissi.
