Maureen White Obituary

Maureen Leigh White

May 9, 1961 - May 3, 2025

Maureen Leigh White, 63, of Richmond, VA, died on May 3, 2025 in her home. She is survived by five siblings: Michelle Bellows (and her husband Richard) of Orinda CA, Michael White of Las Vegas, NV, Alicia White, Bonnie White, and Cindy Houghton of Richmond; five nieces and nephews; and seven grand-nieces and nephews. Dear friends, neighbors, and professional colleagues will also mourn her death.

Maureen was born in Atlantic City, NJ to Sidney Carey Morris and Lewis McKinley White Jr., who both died before her.

Maureen was the first in all generations of her family to earn a college degree. A graduate of Oglethorpe University and Emory University School of Law, Maureen devoted her life and career to the pursuit of justice. She worked with various aspects of criminal defense and family law over 33 years in practice. She was especially passionate in seeking justice and opening up opportunity for children and youth, both in her criminal defense work and as a Guardian ad Litem. She drew profound satisfaction from knowing that her work had changed many of her clients' lives for the better.

In her youth, prior to the onset of health problems that limited her mobility, Maureen enjoyed the outdoors and athletic activities including competitive swimming, downhill skiing, gardening, martial arts, and just going to the beach. She loved animals; her household always included cats. She read avidly and was a stickler for clear writing - finding the best, right word to convey a thought.

Maureen died of pancreatic cancer. We are devastated to lose her so soon.

Friends and family are invited to gather on Saturday May 17 at 2pm at the Northside Grille on Bellevue Avenue in Richmond to share memories and stories.

If friends want to honor Maureen's life with a memorial contribution, the family suggests a donation to either the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls vhbg.org or the American Civil Liberties Union aclu.org/.
