Mildred Colgin Obituary

COLGIN, Mildred L., 94, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2024. She was born in Richmond, Va. on March 5, 1929, to James and Thama Leidy who preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Bernard "Buncie" L. Colgin, Jr.; sisters, Edith Lewis, Frances Baggette, Martha Beasley; son-in-law, Joe Slavic; and great-granddaughter, Sydney Massie. Mildred was a 1946 graduate of John Marshall High School in Richmond. She spent most of her working career at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond retiring as a computer operator. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Everyone who knew Mildred knew she was a talented person who enjoyed creating beautiful quilts and many other types of handcrafted items including floral arrangements, cross-stitch, and needle point. She loved gardening and her ability to grow beautiful plants was recognized by all who knew her. Mildred was a voracious reader and frequently engaged family and friends in controversial topics of the day. She would argue with you one minute then be laughing with you the next. She was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her four children, John Massie (Alice), James Massie, Marianne Slavic, Suzanne Blackburn (Todd); step-children, Sandra Wilson (Tony), Rick Colgin; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Special thanks to the caregivers at the Masonic Home of Virginia and Ascend Hospice who were so good to Mildred during the last months of her life. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to Carlisle Ave. Baptist Church, 2010 Carlisle Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231, or the Masonic Home of Virginia, 500 Masonic Ln., Henrico, Va., 23223.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m., April 19, 2024, in the Chapel at the Masonic Home of Virginia, 500 Masonic Ln., Henrico, Va., 23223.

So sorry for your loss. I remember going to church with my grandparents (Elmo & Gladys Mann) and my grandfather would always be sipping coffee in the gym with Buncie while my grandmother was talking to Mildred. I played softball with Buncie way back when and Mildred was always there. We would talk and she always by his side whenever I saw them. I loved them both. Again, I am sorry to hear of her passing. May the Lord be with you'll and comfort you during this time of loss.
