Mitchell Haller Obituary

HALLER, Mitchell W. Jr., Ph.D. With both sorrow and joy, we celebrate the life of Mitchell Wall Haller Jr., Ph.D., who passed away on April 18, 2023 at the age of 84.

Born on April 16, 1939 in Raleigh, N.C., he was beloved by all who knew him. He grew up in Richmond, Va., raised by his father, Mitchell and his mother, Mary. He attended John Marshall High School and later Virginia Tech where he served in the Marine Corps Reserve. He obtained both his M.S. and Ph.D. from N.C. State University.

On May 30, 1964, he married Carole Lynn Britton. A few years later, their daughter, Susan, was born.

In York, Pa., Mitchell spent his professional life as a metallurgical engineer, including working at Dentsply, and as a professor at Penn State University Middletown, mentoring the next generation of engineers. Mitchell was inducted into N.C. State Materials Science & Engineering Hall of Fame in 2018 for his lifetime of achievements in this field.

But he will best be remembered for his dedication to his family and friends. He was Father to just one, but Dad to many more who could count on him to provide love, support, fatherly advice and driving lessons as needed.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Noralee Gulbicki and Nancy Wilkins; and is survived by his wife, Carole; his daughter, Susan; his sister, Kathleen Barber; and many nieces, nephews and old friends who hold him dear.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
