Nicholas Ouzounis Obituary

OUZOUNIS, Nicholas Theodore "Nick", 60, of Richmond, passed away on Saturday, October 6, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Alexander and Ruth Cibula Ouzounis. He is survived by his children, Sara E. and Matthew E. Ouzounis; his aunts, Grace and Helen Cibula, Virginia Mika, Cathy Blair and Mildred Kephart; he is also survived by extended family in Greece and Czechoslovakia. Nick graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, serving one tour in the Vietnam War. He later joined and retired from the Virginia Air National Guard. He was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 10, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 11, at 11 a.m. in Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Burial with military honors will follow in Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Malvern Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23221.

Mathew and Sara.
Yesterday I learned of Nick's passing. I was heartbroken. He was one of the very first friends I made after I moved to Richmond. We used to enjoy trading barbs at the diner. I was Army and he was AF and we made the most of it. I lost track of him after the breakup, but I always wondered where he was and how he was doing. He was quite ill the last time I saw him at Nick and Alease's.
I wish I could call my DAD one last time. I lost him in 92 and it hurts just as much today as it did then. That pain will never leave you. You never know what will trigger a memory and bring you to sudden tears. But take comfort in knowing that he is beyond any pain or suffering. He is no longer struggling for breath. He is at peace. He is missed by all who loved him.

I'm not sure if people are still checking this Guest Book. But I just wanted to tell everyone THANK YOU for so much support. As the old saying goes "I never thought it could happen to me". Well it did. And it hurts, everyday it hurts. As the days go by I realize that hes really gone. But I feel him all the time. Anyway. Thanks everyone that has shown there support for Sara and I. I love Pop with all my heart and always will.....Please right now if you can....Call your father and tell him how much you love him. Make sure he knows.

Nick. As you cross over, I know that God will be there to welcome you. You will be safe there, and feel no more pain, and be loved, more than ever. I send my sympathy to your family, here, and across the ocean. You, were a good friend, and it was fun when we all got together in Richmond (before you became so ill) and had supper, together. I was very sorry to learn of Nick's death. We first met in elementary school (Mary Munford), where we were in the same classroom for at least one or two years. That was back in the late 1950's. Later, we both attended the same junior high and high schools. In fact, at that time, we only lived about eight blocks from each other. Nick's home had a tile roof, which was somewhat unique. I last saw Nick about ten years ago when we ran into each other at what is now the Kroger store on Cary Street. I know his children and extended family are all proud of his military service. He was a great guy and certainly will be missed.

This is truly a great loss of such a good friend. You couldn't find a better person. I will cherrish and miss the times we spent fishing and going to church togethter.
