Patricia Cummins Obituary

CUMMINS, Patricia Ann Walsh, 78, of Richmond, VA passed away April 29,2024, at her home surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arvel Arlin and Betty Covington Walsh. She is survived by her loving husband, Daniel Cummins; her sisters, Janet Lewis (Ray) and Stephanie Walsh; and her brother, Steven Walsh (Judy); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Pat grew up in Ashland, VA. She attended Averett College and then received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Virginia Commonwealth University. After briefly teaching in high school and community college, Pat spent the remainder of her career working for the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services where she retired as Title V Project Manager.

Pat and Dan's love of travel took them on many adventures together. Pat was happiest planning their next trip abroad, power walking through the neighborhood and doting on her poodle, Lily. She was an absolutely wonderful aunt to her nieces and nephews. She and Dan treated each niece and nephew at the age of thirteen to a destination week building lasting memories with them. Their continued love and support have never wavered.

Pat's calm demeanor, excellent listening skills and active mind engaged us all in the lost art of conversation. She is remembered by her family as generous and steadfast, always graciously hosting family events and bringing people together. Whether it was local theater, art exhibits, a vineyard trip or beach trip, Pat gathered family and friends to enjoy the beauty and activities of our city and state.

Pat was dearly loved by us all and her memory will remain in our hearts.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Richmond SPCA.

Dan, Stephanie and Family,
Having never spent time with Pat outside of the salon, reading her obituary was every part of Pat I new. A wonderful woman. I truly enjoyed her travel stories. The week with your nieces and nephews was an inspiration to travel more with family. Pat was a wealth of information from travel, dogs, wine, entertaining. We shared stories of laughter and even some heartbreak. It was a privilege to see her every month for so many years. May her calm kindness and smile will stay with everyone they way I know it will with me.

Pat was my friend for 63 years. During those years we cheered each other on during the good times and leaned on each other during the not so good times.
Pat was an inspiration in her love of nature, in her
loyalty and in her kindness.
Her spirit was strong and will live on in those that loved her.

Pat was such a lovely woman. When both our mothers were living at the Hanover Manor, Pat often brought her beautiful black standard poodle along to visit and provide therapy to the residents. My heart goes out to Pat's whole family, but especially to Janet, my friend from high school. May Pat rest in peace, and may happy memories sustain you in your grief.

I first met Pat about 50 years ago when I went with her sister Janet to visit her on the Eastern Shore. When she moved back to Richmond, we reconnected as two single city dwellers. We regularly went to dinner and Arts Shows and Street Fairs and Fan/Church Hill events like the Christmas House tours. She was a wonderful, trustworthy friend who was also a beautiful, kind, and caring person. She was always there to listen, and her advice, like her taste, was always perfect.
After I got married and moved to NJ, PA, and MI over the course of 35 years, we stayed in touch. Pat was the kind of friend you could talk to a couple of times a year and pick back up like you lived next door and had seen her yesterday. We also got to know and appreciate Dan and the joy they had together. When we were deciding where to retire, Pat & Dan’s hospitality led us to staying with them when we came back to visit Richmond. They were one of the main reasons we moved back.
Since moving back in 2010, we have had many fun outings like the trip to the Charlottesville vineyard with their poodle, Stella, in the back seat, and many dinners together. We even talked about moving to the same retirement home.
Pat was so loved by her dear family and friends, and I know that I will think of her often and cherish her memory always.

I will always remember Pat training her poodles. She was always so patient and kind to her dogs and also to any humans that came her way. Not so easy to show kindness to both which is why she was amazing. I will remember her and will keep Dan and family in my thoughts.

Dan, Pat will be greatly missed.
Bonnie and I always enjoyed speaking with her on our walks. I hope you will find comfort in being around those who provide comfort and in the beautiful memories you have of times past with Pat.
