Patrick Reardon Obituary

REARDON, Patrick Augustine, M.D., 90, son of the late Francis X. "Foxo" Reardon and the late Carolyn Thurston Reardon, departed this life on May 18, 2022.

Dr. Reardon (more endearingly known as "Dr. Pat") was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Dorothy Estes Reardon; brothers, Francis X. Reardon, John E. "Jack" Reardon, Joseph J. "Jerry" Reardon and Gordon T. Reardon; and sister, Margaret A. Latimer.

He is survived by son, Colonel (ret.) Patrick D. Reardon and his family, Josie, Patrick, Peter and Matthew, of California; and by his daughter, Maria Nguyen and her family, Tuan, Sean, Tori, Gabrielle and Marc, of Ashburn, Va.; his sister, Rose Mary Cosby of North Chesterfield; and his brother, Michael Reardon (Ute) of Mechanicsville; and many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Pat graduated from Benedictine High School in Richmond and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation. He survived the now-infamous boot camp at Parris lsland, and was called to active duty during the Korean War from August 1950 to February 1952. A self-made man, he then used his Gl Bill and money saved from working for a local railroad company to put himself through college, and graduated with honors from the Medical College in Virginia in 1959.

ln 1962, with the war in Vietnam brewing hotter - but still somewhat out of the limelight - a compassionate and defender of the poor and needy, Dr. Pat receiving another calling to serve, decided to put his medical practice on hold and volunteered to go to Quang Ngai, Vietnam to work for the then famous Dr. Tom Dooley's founded organization, MEDICO/CARE. It was in Quang Ngai where Dr. Pat met up with, whom later becoming his best friend, Mr. Huy, a not so young Second Lieutenant in the ARVN Medical Corps. And it was also there that Dr. Pat met and was asked to be the godfather to Mr. Huy's son, Patrick, whom he later adopted along with his sister, Maria, and brought them to the U.S. at the end of the war.

In 1967, Dr. Pat again put his thriving practice on hold and chose again to return to Vietnam to work with A.M.A. (USAID) Quang Ngaiand Danang, Vietnam and later USAID/US Catholic Conference, Nha Trang, Vietnam. After Vietnam, he attained residency at hospitals in Honolulu and Hilo, Hawaii, before finally settling down with his final practice with the Petersburg Children Clinic, Ltd., in Colonial Heights. He retired in November 1997.

Dr. Pat was an avid gardener and could often be found working in his gardens. He was known for sharing his summer crop.

Answering the calls from the needy, he volunteered and courageously served more than four years in war-torn Vietnam. He was also a staunch defender of the unborn around the world. Dr. Pat's compassionate ways, unshakable faith and humanitarianism will be more than sorely missed by all.

I was Dr. Reardon's assistant for 12 years. He was a thorough diagnostic physician and a caring thoughtful person. He loved the children that he cared for. It was not unusual for him to meet worried parents with ill children in his office after hours. I was also privileged enough to enjoy the fruits of his garden that he took such pride in. His faith was his guiding light. He will be sorely missed. I will always have a special place in my heart for him.

We are so very sorry to hear of Dr. Readon's passing. He was our pedestrian to all three of our children. They all stayed to well in there teens. They were so upset they had gotten to old to see him. What a great man he was. I remember him setting in his office reading books. I asked nurse Mary what was he was reading? " Oh ..she said, he is always reading up on medical things." I loved his nurse Mary also. He was loved by many. He was an angel on earth as he will be an angel in heaven. Love you Dr. Readon

Dr Reardon oversaw the care of our first child born two and a half months early back in 1975. She was born at the old Petersburg General Hospital in Petersburg VA. Although there was no NICU at this hospital, Dr. Reason gave meticulous care to our daughter through which she was able to survive the cards initially stacked against her frail little body. We love you Dr Reardon, and owe you a debt of gratitude you gave not just to our child, but to the countless lives you provided the greatest of care to. Although we miss you now, we'll meet you again in eternity. God bless you dear man and the example you set before us all. You most definitely have set the bar high...

Dr. Pat was my brother-in-law. When he came to our house, loaded down with boxes of giant muffins, fruits and other goodies from Sams Club, or when he brought VHS's he had taped for the children, he never stayed long. He never stayed to just chat. He was in and out in ten minutes, doing his kind deeds unobtrusively, as if not to draw attention to himself. Seeing us all excited was enough for him, and his smile confirmed that he was happy, too.

Our deepest condolences, and we all love you, Dr. Pat. Thank you for for services. You´re a true Saint among us. Our dad, Mr. Huy, cried when he heard the sad news, he loves you very much, Dr. Pat. He called me today morning, Sunday, 5/22/2022, that he really wants to attend your funeral and pays his sincere respects to you, Dr. Pat. You knows how my dad is! A little 3 more months, my dad will be 98 years old, and as of right now, he vividly remembers how you helped our family, and became a God Father of my older brother, and your wife as my older sister´s God Mother.

Thank you for everything you had done for our family and our beloved country Viet Nam during the war time and after.

You will be missed greatly.

Sincerely,
Nguyen Duc Minh

There is a saying that goes: To be capable of a steady and lifelong friendship is one of the greatest proofs, not only of goodness of heart but of the strength of mind. While these long-lasting friendships are quite rare nowadays, I will always admire the long-lived friendship that Dr. Pat had with my own grandfather, Mr. Huy (his best friend). I was fortunate enough to know Dr. Pat since I was a child, and one of my first recollections of him was the time when he gave me a sticker of a flower. This moment took place during our family vacation together in Fiji, and it serves as a prominent memory in my mind today. The flower, in a sense, reminded me of Dr. Pat, and how he symbolizes a kind of youthful flower that blooms amidst adversity. Whenever Dr. Pat visited Southern California, I will always remember his lively dancing with my grandpa. Although he was quite old at the time, his soul blossomed with a type of excitement and joy that I was so lucky to have been able to witness (i.e. through his jumping jacks and nonstop dancing). I also was able to talk with him many times throughout my life, and I will always cherish our fruitful conversations together. They say that long friendships are like jewels, polished over time to become beautiful and enduring. Although Dr. Pat and my grandfather were separated by distance for many years, their friendship remained strong nonetheless, and I thank Dr. Pat for helping to bring out the youthful spirit in my grandfather whenever he visited. Although Dr. Pat is no longer with us, I will always remember his kind and friendly persona. May he Rest in Peace and may God bless him always.
