STANLEY, Peter von Schilling, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center in Richmond, Va. The son of Sara von Schilling Stanley and James Selwyn Stanley, he was born in Richmond on September 20, 1938. He attended Fay School in Southborough, Mass., and Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Va., and graduated from Governor Dummer Academy, now The Governor's Academy, in Byfield, Mass., and from Harvard College in 1961 with a degree in psychology. After serving in the Army in Vietnam on a special assignment to study the psychological effects of guerrilla warfare and at Walter Reed Army Medical Center training monkeys for space missions, he became a stock broker, working at various times at Merrill Lynch, Wheat First Securities, Branch Cabell, and Scott & Stringfellow. For several years he was also an alcoholism counselor with Region X in Charlottesville. A lifelong musician, he hitch-hiked with his guitar and sleeping bag around the U.S. collecting folk songs wherever he could find them, admitting that the best source was the Library of Congress. He engendered his love for music in all who heard him sing and play his guitar and banjo, inspiring four generations of family, friends and audiences, while living in Richmond and Rapidan, Va., and homesteading in Talkeetna, Alaska. An avid outdoorsman, he and close friends reached the summit of Mt. McKinley in 1985, and with family and friends canoed rivers and lakes in Virginia, West Virginia, Canada and Norway. He was also an enthusiastic hiker and runner. Peter is survived by his wife, Virginia Armistead Williams Stanley of Orange, Va.; their three sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher von Schilling Stanley and his wife, Angela, George Dandridge Williams Stanley and his wife, Brooks, James Selwyn Stanley II and his wife, Ann, all of Richmond; his sister, Meredith Stanley Scott and her husband, Alfred, of Richmond; his brother, James Dowdell Stanley of San Jose, Calif.; his half-sister and half-brother, Ingelise Joan Stanley and Thomas Eric Stanley, both of Copenhagen, Denmark; five grandchildren, Tyler von Schilling Stanley, Emma Dandridge Stanley, Elizabeth Marshall McGuire Stanley, Alex Harper Stanley and Jane Armistead Stanley; and two stepgrandchildren, Avery Quinn Loinette and Reese Camille Loinette; along with his beloved nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Rapidan, Va., on Saturday, February 18, at 11 a.m. There will be a reception after the service at the Rapidan Volunteer Fire Department. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the VCU Parkinson's Disease Center, P.O. Box 980539, Richmond, Va. 23298-0539, or to Hospice Community Care, 10128 W.
