Dr. Philip Joseph McEwen

Philip McEwen Obituary

Dr. Philip Joseph McEwen, 83, husband of Jane Elizabeth Collett McEwen of 56 years, died Thursday, February 26, 2004. He was the son of the late Samuel and Annie Belle Johnson McEwen. Dr. McEwen was a veteran of WWII and served with 5th Air Force in the Pacific Theater of operations. Dr. McEwen attended George Washington University and received his doctor of optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry. He was a member of the American Optometric Association and the Virginia Optometric Association, where he was elected Optometrist of the Year by his peers in 1972. He was a former president of the Virginia Optometric Association and former president of the Academy of Optometry, trustee Virginia Council of Health and Medical Care, trustee of Southern Council of Optometrists, and served ten years on Virginia Board of Examiners in Optometry. a member of the board of deacons and Sunday school teacher of First Baptist Church, and a member of 50 years and former president Petersburg Kiwanis Club. Besides his wife, surviving are three sons, Philip J. McEwen Jr. and wife, Karen Joy of Richmond, James C. McEwen II and wife, Cheryl Lynne of Virginia Beach, Robert S. McEwen; and six granddaughters, Megan Joy, Karen Anne, Sarah Kathleen, Molly Elizabeth, Jordan Taylor, and Hannah Jane; brother, James C. McEwen and wife, Rachel of Virginia Beach. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 28, 2004 at 11 a.m. in First Baptist Church, Petersburg, with Dr. W. Rand Forder and Dr. Dean R. Frazeur Jr. officiating. A private burial will follow in Blandford Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 235 W. Washington St., Petersburg, Va. 23803. Dr. McEwen's family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Homes.

I first met Dr. McEwen in the early 70's. My entire family went to him for all of their vision needs. I remember him as a caring, soft spoken man who seemed to love his profession and delighted in helping his patients.
