R. Scott Obituary

R. Carter Scott III

June 3, 1941 - July 8, 2025

R. Carter Scott III, 84, of Richmond, VA passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

Carter is survived by his wife, Ann Armistead Scott; two daughters, Randy and Catty Scott; and six grandchildren, Peyton, Clair, and Scott Colee, and Carter, Rutledge, and Lucy Smith.

Carter attended and graduated from St. Christopher's School, where he excelled in athletics and quickly forged relationships which would turn into life-long friendships. He was a 1963 graduate of the University of Virginia, at which time he signed on to the Marine Reserves. After fulfilling his duties as a reservist, Carter entered TC Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond and spent many years as a civil litigator in both state and federal courts. Looking to change course a bit, Carter, at the ripe old age of 45, traveled back and forth from Richmond to New York City to earn a second law degree in Federal Taxation from NYU School of Law. He contributed his well-earned knowledge and experience as a partner with several Richmond law firms over a successful 60-year career. Carter was extremely proud of his work advocating for others for what he thought was right and fair, the compass which guided him in living a life full of meaning and in always acting with love.

Service to others was essential to his sense of purpose, and he actively supported organizations which held meaning for him, including the United Way and Leadership Metro Richmond. He served on the boards of the Central Richmond Association, the Virginia Student Aid foundation, the Metro Chamber of Commerce, and St. Catherine's School and was the former chairman of Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Hospital.

Nothing made Carter happier than spending time with his grandchildren, especially at Figure Eight Island, hitting the course with his cherished golf group, and lending a hand to a friend in need. He delighted in playing bridge, fly fishing in Montana (or anywhere he could find a babbling brook), quiet mornings reading the paper, and cheering on his beloved Dodgers or Virginia Cavaliers. All who knew him would say that he was, to his core, kind, generous, and full of gratitude for his life and those in it. Carter was a gentleman in the truest sense and was always quick with a smile, a handshake, and a clever joke to brighten someone's day. This big-hearted man, lovingly nicknamed "Bigs" by his family, will be missed in the biggest way.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 21st at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

In his memory, please wear your snappiest plaid or striped shirt, bowtie optional.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 815 E. Grace Street, Richmond, VA 23219.

Kendall and I are very sad that Carter has passed and moved on. Our condolences to Ann and family. Moving from Franklin, Va to Richmond after college and Navy service, Carter and I enjoyed many years playing platform tennis at our club. Carter was a sponsor to my election at this club. He was always there to lend his support to me. A true Virginia gentleman. Kendall and I send our heartfelt support to his family. Frederick and Kendall Minton, Irvington, Va.
