Raymond Brann Obituary

BRANN, Raymond Ellis Jr., died of renal failure on February 2, 2024, at Virginia Hospital Center. Raymond grew up the son of a school superintendent in the town of Heathsville, in the Northern Neck of Virginia. While in high school, he was chosen to serve as a page in the VA General Assembly. He later attended the Macintyre School of Commerce at the University of Virginia, where he was also a member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity. Years later, he completed his MBA at Old Dominion University. Upon his graduation from UVA in 1962, he served two years in the U.S. Navy as a supply officer, including tours to Panama and the Mediterranean, before beginning his banking career. He held numerous executive positions with the First Virginia Bank corporation, leading banks in Tidewater, Richmond, and the Tri-Cities area. He ended his career as Executive Vice President of the FVB Corporation at its headquarters in Falls Church, where he facilitated the bank's merger with BB&T (now Truist). He was proud to have served on several non-profit boards throughout his career.

Raymond was an active UVA alumnus and enjoyed tailgating at Virginia football games, for which he held season tickets. He was an avid gardener, known for keeping vegetable gardens and even transplanting favorite specimens every time he moved. He took great pleasure in lounging on the beach at his retirement condominium in Sandbridge, Virginia. He was a close follower of news and politics, reading two newspapers a day up until his final illness.

Raymond is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Geraldine Copley Brann; his three children Sara Brann (Bill), Raymond Brann III (Aleisha), and Lee Brann; and two grandchildren Eli and Emery Brann. He is also survived by his brother William Perry Brann.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 9, at Gibeon Baptist Church, 48 John Deere Road, Callao, VA 22435.

Ray was an amazing person and one of my absolute best friends. I will miss his keen wit and our discussions just about everything. Many fond memories attending basketball games, concerts and social gatherings. My sincere condolences to his children, grandchildren and his loving wife Geraldine.

Raymond was a wonderful chef. He loved a good meal with good company and was a consummate host. As in his business, in his social life he was grand and most generous. I have many happy memories of stays with Raymond and Geraldine. He was even seemingly glad to see us when once we left, then returned because our flight had been scrubbed from Reagan for the next day! God bless and keep you Raymond and all of your lovely family. We will miss you. Sending love to Geraldine, Sara and Lee and Ray.

Ray was certainly one of the best examples of both a businessman and overall class I have had the privilege to meet. Sincere condolences to his family.

My Mom (Gloria Hauk) worked for Raymond for several years at First Virginia after he came to manage the changeover from Tri-City Bank- she had nothing but great things to say about him and was impressed with how well he managed the bank and his personal and professional dealings at all levels as a true "Southern Gentleman".

I was blessed to work for Mr. Brann. He was a wealth of knowledge. It was amazing how he could glance at an article and immediately point out any mistakes. Please know the Brann family will be in my prayers.

Ray was a friend and a great neighbor. We shared many fun times and neighborhood parties with our families and kids in Virginia Beach Wolfsnare area. We even inherited their dog , Beau , when they transferred to Orange, Virginia. Adorable kids . Our Sympathy to his family in their loss.

Mr. Brann hired me in 1988 to work for Tri-City Bank & Trust Company. He was an extraordinary leader, and it was a privilege to have been associated with him. Condolences to Gerry and all of Mr. Brann´s family.
