I was not surprised to learn of Uncle Dick's passing, although I felt dismayed as it seemed I was the last person to find out, 2 or 3 weeks after the fact. He was my great uncle on the Jarratt/DeCair side of the family, making me his great nephew. I stayed in touch with him for the past 25-ish years, but despite living relatively close (Key West) my last visit with him was in 2004. He enjoyed hearing about my money-finding adventures, he loved emails that were centered around word puns and he really enjoyed the numerous pictures I would send him. He spoke very highly of Shane, who I've never met. He never talked much about his past endeavors, so I never really knew how accomplished he was until I read this obituary. I did most of my growing up in rural SW Lower Michigan in the 1970s & 80s. My fondest memory of him is from around 1979 or 80; he was visiting Grandma & Grandpa DeCair & all the rest of the family/families in and around Colon, MI, and he took me to get an ice cream at the local Dairy Queen. He drove us around Colon as we ate our ice cream and he told me things about the area and his life when he was a youngster. I miss communicating with him, but I'll get over that in time, I guess. It's my hope that his wonderful spirit manifests in everyone who reads this.

My condolences to Dick´s family and many other friends. For me, his memory will be a blessing. Dick had an amazing gift to make deep friendships. He was a great colleague at the Miami Lighthouse and remained a friend after we both moved on to other positions. May he rest in peace knowing that he truly made a difference to countless people with his many talents.
