Richard Uhl Obituary

Richard G. Uhl

Richard G. Uhl, 84, known lovingly as "Pops" to so many, passed peacefully on February 25, 2025, in Richmond, Virginia, with several generations of family surrounding him. He was born April 14, 1940, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the son of Gustave and Margaret Uhl.

He served honorably in the US Army, September 1963 - August 1965 and was a proud graduate of Lehigh University. Following graduation, he became a chemical engineer, working at Philip Morris for the majority of his career. He prided himself on being an expert in his field and loved to be called on for his knowledge, even after retirement. He enjoyed experiencing other cultures through food and travel and doted on his family at Disney World many times. He was a hard-working, family-first man.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Antoinette Uhl; sister, Virginia Uhl; and brother-in-law, Rudolph Fischl Jr.

He is survived by his five children, Richard, Heidi, Phillip, Robin and Alex; grandchildren, Victoria, Leo, Maria, Mikey, Max, and Maggie; many step-grandchildren; great-grandson, Shepherd; sister, Deborah Uhl; and brother, Mark Uhl.

Richard was laid to rest and honored in a private ceremony surrounded by family. The family plans to host a celebration of life to remember Richard at a later time. He will be greatly missed for his humor, love, generosity, and dedication to family and friends.

My honorary uncle.
I miss him so much. The Uhls have been my friends since 1980 when Heidi and I became BFF's in 1980 at Brookland Middle School in RVA. I still miss Aunt Toni, and now I will miss Uncle Dick as well.

My deepest condolences. Dick was brilliant. I appreciated how he freely shared his knowledge with me early in my career at Philip Morris. I also saw his humor. I am happy to see he lived a long and full life with his family. God bless you.

Dick was a great friend and mentor. He always was positive and helpful. Dick had special knowledge on processes that he shared and helped technical progress. He was always a friend and advisor. He helped me and I appreciate his help and candor. Thank you Dick for your contributions to technology and career.

Dick Uhl was one of my Dad´s (Russ Kembel) best friends since childhood and is also my Godfather. We connected back later in life and I will treasure my dinners in Richmond with him (he always selected the best wines). I also have lovely and caring notes from him that I also will treasure. I am so very sad to hear of my Godfather´s passing. May he RIP! My deepest sympathies to his family that he adored!

I cherished my friendship with Dick. He was a technical wizard who generously shared his expertise with his co-workers. Both serious and funny, he could craft ingenious ways of solving problems while including the opinions of others and making them feel like contributors. That was a part of his wisdom and stalwart character. Soldier on, dear warrior. I will miss you.

It was a great privilege in my life to know Dick as a good friend, teacher, mentor and maybe the smartest fountain of knowledge and memory in his field and in a multitude of trivia. I listed Dick as a friend because he truly was and my wife and I will miss him dearly. I am so grateful and blessed that Dick was a part of our life. I´ll never forget his wit, honesty, and kindness and his laugh! Plus all the 36 hour straight shifts we spent together with our "tribe" in Ancram NY trying and succeeding to produce MAT. I will miss him.

I will always remember Dick. For two years in a row, I saw him every day in the basement of the D pilot plant at Philip Morris USA, where a few of us would gather for lunch. He was always there, ready to answer any questions we had. We were a great team, each of us working to contribute to the company in our own way. Beyond his deep technical expertise in manufacturing processes, he had an impressive knowledge of history, reaching as far back as King Herod. I especially remember how valuable his insights were in the chemistry of one of our processes. I hope he is resting in peace, and I send my best wishes to his family.

Dick was a close friend and mentor for nearly the entire time I worked at Philip Morris. I saw both the serious and the funny sides of him over many years. From a technical viewpoint, Dick was brilliant. His depth of knowledge and his insights were unparalleled. But he would balance it out with, "what do you think the Eagles are going to do tonight?!?" On a more personal level, he was a great friend when I lost my wife to breast cancer, just 5 months after he lost Antoinette. Dick was simply one of the greatest human beings I have ever known. He will be forever missed.

My mentor. Dick was a wonderful man that I learned so much from during our years working together. I know you as a family will miss him, but his endearing personality will be with each of youin the memories you shared.
