August 6, 2025
Samuel "Sam" Gardner Hill, 76, of Crewe, VA, passed away peacefully at his home on August 6, 2025. Born on December 5 1948, in Charleston, WV, Sam was the son of the late Neva Ruth Newland Hill and Samuel Frederick Hill.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, David Charles Hill. A man of absolute integrity and unwavering faith, Sam served as a deacon at Pryor Memorial Presbyterian Church in Crewe, where he lived out his devotion to God through humble service and steady example. After graduating from Hermitage High School in 1966, he answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army from January 1969 to December 1970, achieving the rank of Sergeant. His courage and dedication were recognized with numerous commendations, including the Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device and First Oak Leaf Cluster, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the Purple Heart, the Marksman Qualification Badge with Machine-gun Bar, the Expert Badge with Grenade Bar, the Sharpshooter Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar, the Air Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation Badge.
Following his military service, Sam built a successful career as the owner of What The Sam Hill Limo Service, where he was known for his professionalism, dependability, and attention to detail. Above all, Sam adored his family. His greatest joy came from time spent with his daughter, Brandie, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who filled his life with laughter and love. He was a devoted and loving big brother to Andy, always offering encouragement, guidance, and a steady presence that could be counted on in every season of life. His pride in those he loved was matched only by the care and dedication he poured into his passions. An avid classic car collector, Sam could often be found at car shows with Brandie, meticulously tending to his prized collection and enjoying rides with his faithful dog, Red. He was loyal, generous, and quietly particular; a combination that made life with him memorable and full of laughter.
He is survived by his brother, H. Andy Hill (Kathy) of Midlothian; his daughter, Brandie Williams (Robbie); grandchildren, Kori Sestilli (Mark), Megan Gustavson (Nathan), Jake May (Lindsey), and Sawyer May; great-grandchildren, Haylan, Ellie, Peter, Sadie, Ezra, Peyton, Hurley, Kensley, William, and Camryn; as well as two nieces and three nephews.
