KILPATRICK, Samuel James "Jim", Jr., died May 18, 2022, at Westminster Canterbury Richmond at age 91.

Dr. Kilpatrick was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1931. Educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, he then enrolled at the Queen's University in Belfast, where he received an undergraduate degree, a master's degree and a Ph.D. in medical statistics. At the Queen's University, he joined the Air Squadron and won his R.A.F. wings. He was a member of the 502 Squadron of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force.

In 1965, Jim was recruited to head the Department of Biometry (now Biostatistics) at MCV and he, his wife and their children moved to Richmond, Va. Jim led the Department for 18 years as Chairman. He published two texts, co-authored over 50 peer reviewed papers and held research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Rockefeller Institute. Upon his retirement in 2000, he was appointed Professor Emeritus of Biostatistics at Virginia Commonwealth University. In his free time, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, sailing, skiing and cruising.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, May Kilpatrick; his son, Mark Kilpatrick and his wife, Tyler; his daughter, Sara Kilpatrick Buetow and her husband, Peter. Four grandchildren survive him, Alice Kilpatrick Crutcher and her husband, Robert, Duncan Kilpatrick, Christopher Buetow and Anna Buetow; and one great-grandson, Robbie Crutcher. Also surviving Jim are his brother and sister-in-law, Robin and Winsome Kilpatrick, in Belfast; and other family members in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia.

The family deeply appreciates the care Jim received at Westminster Canterbury, in both the Gables and Parsons Health Center, second floor.
