Shelah Scott Obituary

Shelah Kane Scott

September 26, 1932 - October 25, 2024

Shelah Kane Scott died on October 25, 2024 surrounded by friends and family at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge (WCBR), Charlottesville, VA. Shelah was born in Richmond, VA and was the oldest of the four daughters of Richmond Keith Kane and Amanda Bryan Kane. Shelah was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 56 years, James Hamilton Scott, Jr. and her sister Anne Kane McGuire. Shelah was raised in New York City, attended the Potomac School in McLean, VA, was a 1950 graduate of The Brearley School in NYC, attended Smith College in Northampton, MA for two years before marrying Jim, and finished her undergraduate degree at Barnard College in NYC. After her three children were grown, she earned her Master of Education at the University of Virginia. She shared her passion for education and lifelong learning by teaching reading at Venable (now Trailblazer) Elementary School in Charlottesville and tutoring adults who had been failed by the education system. Despite leaving Smith after two years, Shelah was a proud alumna and was very close to her classmates there. She served for many decades as class agent for the Smith Class of 1954.

Shelah was exceptionally committed to her family, her friends, and her faith, as well as the Charlottesville community that had been her home since 1960. She dedicated most of her life to supporting her children and grandchildren in whatever pursuits they undertook. The last two decades were spent attending the sporting events, theater productions, and milestones that shaped her grandchildren's lives. She could be found seated proudly on the front row, cheering them on, even into her 90's. Shelah's intelligence, grace, and practical nature made her an invaluable volunteer for and a board member of many local organizations and her church. Shelah was an avid reader and gardener, loved traveling to new places, and thrived on making new friends. She always accepted people just as they were, regardless of race, religion, or background and was fascinated to listen to the stories of others' lives. When she and Jim moved to WCBR in 2003 they continued to make new friends, many of whom brought her great strength and support during her final weeks.

Shelah is survived by two sisters, Hope Kane Childs of Norfolk, CT and Constance Kane Tucker of Wickford, RI; one sister-in-law, Mary Scott "Polly" Cardozo of Richmond VA; three children, Elizabeth Dallam Lee Scott, Keith Kane Scott, James Hamilton "Jay" Scott, III, and daughter-in-law Sarah Elisabeth Bedford, all of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, Bedford Henley "Ford" Scott, Alden James Scott, and Elisabeth Peirson Scott, as well as numerous beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Shelah and her family are forever grateful to the staff at WCBR who contributed to her care and wellbeing during the past 21 years. Special thanks go to the WCBR Healthcare physicians and staff, T & L Companions, and Hospice of the Piedmont who all worked hard to make sure her final weeks were comfortable.

In lieu of flowers, Shelah would love for donations to be sent to any of the following:

I´ve shared the story of me being dyslexic but some don´t know that my dad and daughter are as well. Pop graduated from a segregated school not knowing how to read. At the age of 22, with a new baby boy on the way he decided that he wanted to learn to read and write so he could teach me. While working at Estes IGA someone referred him to the Adult learning center in Charlottesville. His assigned tutor, teacher and friend´s name was Shelah Scott. Over those years, she taught my dad how to read so he could teach me. Many evening hours volunteered and discoveries made. His final assignment was to write his life story. I remember the day when I was 10 or 11 years old and I found a copy of that story. Thinking about it still makes me cry and proud and happy and grateful for Mrs. Scott. You would think that was the end of the story but it wasn´t. Angels like Mrs. Scott never leave your life. Every year she´d send a check, letter and calendar with inspirational quotes. Those checks were used to supplement camps, tutors and education. She and my parents are one of the major influences for starting of the Be A Blessing Non Profit. Our mentoring program, homeless initiatives with local public schools and dyslexia advocacy were all started with her in mind. That seed of investment in my dad that bloomed into me and my family has affected many kids and family. 10 years ago when Mrs. Scott read my book (full circle moment) and learned about our non profit...she wrote the first check.

Mrs. Scott is an angel and me and my family are forever grateful.

Our condolences and prayers to the Scott family. Our family corresponded with Miss Shelah each year at Christmas and were just informed of her passing. Jim and Shelah befriended me, my wife Carletta and our oldest son Cory while I was going through chemo at UVA when Jim and I shared a hospital room. Miss Shelah remained our friend after Jim"s passing. She was a dear soul and wonderful friend that will be missed. May the comfort of Jesus bless each of your hearts. God bless.

The delightful serendipities of knowing Shelah began in our NYC high school days at Brearley & Collegiate Schools. We neighbored in East 70s NYC & our school glee clubs & theatricals brought us together. After 10 years separation, we found we were next door neighbors on East 84th St, NYC while Jim was a Wall Streeter. Shelah & I labored on Morningside Heights, she at Barnard College & I as resident physician at St Lukes Hospital. When I moved to UVA Medical School 12 years later, we met again as Shelah´s sister Anne was wife of my friend & UVA cardiology colleague Lockhart McGuire. Shelah was a most welcoming gifted friend whom we met often at our mutual local activities. We also met, befriended & admired her remarkable public-spirited mother. Shelah will be greatly missed as a friend to all & as an outstanding leader in many Charlottesville-Albemarle community activities.

Shelah was a friend to me and to everyone she met.
She imitated Christ in every part of her life. I am glad I knew her. Right now she is in heaven at peace with Jesus.
