Stephen Bernard Gilmartin

1934 - 2021

GILMARTIN, Stephen Bernard, died on October 22, 2021, at his home in Ashland, Virginia. He was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts on January 6, 1934. Steve was educated at St. Bernard's School in Fitchburg and then continued his education at Boston College. He began his broadcasting career in Gardner, Massachusetts and then moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he worked for WTOL. Steve then moved to WEIM in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1958, he became the Sports Director for WMAL in Washington, D.C. and was known as "The voice of the Redskins" for 14 years. He also did broadcasts for the University of Maryland football and basketball teams. During that time, he did broadcasts for professional golf, the Washington Bullets and the Washington Capitals basketball teams. A later move to Houston, Texas brought broadcasting for the Rice University Football games as well as radio and TV shows for KPRC and KTRH. Steve continued doing the broadcasts for the Rockets Basketball games until his retirement in the early 1990's.

Steve and Sherrell Wilkins Gilmartin were married on August 24, 1962, in Alexandria, Virginia. He leaves her now in death after 59 years. Steve leaves behind three children, Ellen Gilmartin Johnson (Lowell), Stephen Wilkins Gilmartin (Wendy) and John Fitzgibbon Gilmartin (Michelle); as well as 10 grandchildren.

The family will be receiving after 5 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2021, and wishes all to join in this celebration of his life. Cocktails and buffet will be served at 206 Howard Street, Ashland, Virginia.
