Steve Mahanes Obituary

Steve Mahanes

August 23, 1949 - September 1, 2024

Steve Mahanes, age 75, passed on September 1, 2024. He was born on August 23, 1949 to parents Ruth and Edward Mahanes Jr. He is survived by his girlfriend Robin Clement, brothers David Mahanes, Lenny Blyer and sister Marjorie Terry. Preceded in death by loved friend and motorcycle racing sponsor, Donald Crockett. After graduating from Lee Davis High School, he served as a drill sergeant in the Army National Guard during Vietnam. After serving, he dove into his life's passion. He worked in body and paint and worked on race cars for Bill Dennis in the early 70's. He raced flat track motorcycles from 1974 to 1989. Steve raced vintage road racing motorcycles, winning 3 WERA Motorcycle Road Racing national championships in the GP 350 class in 2001, 2002 and 2003. This led him to become best friends with Reno Leoni, head of Ducati Racing in the 70's-80's, Steve Leoni and family, Holger Krause and son Daniel Krause. He enjoyed visiting and exploring Europe with his friends. His passion was vintage motorcycle restoration. He specialized in Harley Davidson flat track KR and XR 750, and Ducati Desmo Motorcycles. Steve built bikes and worked as a machinist with dear friend Ludwig Preinesberger, who was part of his European motorcycle family. He was a great wealth of knowledge and could do anything he put his mind to. Celebration of life to be announced later.

Steve was a great friend in our youth. Have not seen him in about 50 years but still have fond memories and had hopes of seeing him again, not to be! Although I never knew who he became as a man, I will have fond memories of our youth and so many fast times in fast cars, before his real passion blossomed into two-wheelers. I will miss him, he was unforgettable! Peace to his friends and family! Mike
