Steven Phillips Obituary
December 27, 1965 - August 30, 2024
Steven Michael "Steve" Phillips, 58, of Mechanicsville, VA passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends on Friday, August 30th, 2024.
He is survived by his mother, Carol Blanchard; his devoted wife of 25 years, Elizabeth Phillips; and his children, Jordan Phillips (Tyler), Kaesey Grayson (Katherine), and J.T. Atkinson (Carleigh). He is also survived by siblings Cindy Biedenbach (Charles), Scott Phillips (Renee), and Denean Blanchard. He was affectionately known as Pops to his grandchildren, Brystol Atkinson, Bexley Atkinson, Wyatt Shamburg (due Jan 2025), Brayden Shamburg, Bentley Grady, and Braiden Koon.
Steve spent nearly four decades in service of firefighting and public safety. He first became a volunteer firefighter in 1981 and balanced that time with his work at Dominion Virginia Power, serving many localities until he was hired as a Hanover County career firefighter in 2003. He ultimately served as Deputy Chief for the Virginia Fire Marshal Academy beginning in 2020.
Steve will be honored with a Celebration of Life at Fairmount Christian Church in Mechanicsville, VA on October 5th. Details to follow in the Mechanicsville Local. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation or the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation.

May your memories of Steve be strong and not waiver. He was a great guy and I knew him from Manchester High. He was so caring and loving to everyone and I was heartbroken for his family for his loss. God Bless you all and may your heart heal soon from this loss.

I had the pleasure of meeting this amazing man, while him and his fire department came to our cry for help to help a dream of a little girl with brain cancer to have the best playhouse ever. Boy did they come thru. I spent the day with him and another firefighter shopping and saying get it nothing but the best for this little girl. A true hero in my eyes. His family alone with other family came out and helped us clean up the yard and give Sawyer the dream house she wanted. I can only imagine the two of them hanging out and Sawyer telling some jokes. Prayers for the family.
