Steven Hal Sperry

SPERRY, Steven Hal, 74 of Mechanicsville, Va., passed away on July 28, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Pat; his son, Seth; daughter-in-law, Toni; and granddaughter. Steve was the Son of Don and Marian Sperry of Rochester, Minnesota. He attended the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota. Steve joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Langley Air Force Base in the Intelligence Data Handling System. He served 18 months in Vietnam where he earned the AF Commendation Medal for meritorious honor while engaging in military operations against Viet Cong forces.

After completing his military obligation, he joined the custom decorating division of JCPenney and supervised the custom drapery workroom in Richmond. In 1978, he returned to Newport News as co-owner and decorator of Trends and Traditions. He also served as a sales representative for Kasmir Fabrics. He served on the Peninsula Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Board during his time in Newport News and became a Big Brother to three Little Brothers.

Steve had a deep love for contract bridge, which was developed at a young age by his grandfather, Hugh Sperry. Steve became an American Contract Bridge Life Master at the age of 19. He taught soldiers bridge during downtime in Vietnam and at Langley. Steve and his long-time playing partner won and placed in many local, regional and national ACBL tournaments.

A private gravesite service was held Friday, August 5.
