WHITENER, Susan Terrell, passed away peacefully after a valiant fight against pancreatic cancer on July 16, 2021.
Susan was a light on this planet. She spent her professional career in early childhood education teaching kindness and compassion, together with science, music and reading to many children over the years. Susan loved dancing, music and playing clarinet, harp and piano. She competed in several pageants as a young woman, winning the Miss Peanut Festival Pageant in 1977. She was a majorette at Thomas Dale High School, where she was also an honor student and was on the dance team at Virginia Tech, where she majored in Psychology. Later in life, she went back to get her master's degree in Early Childhood Education at Walden University. Susan always saw the best in people and her gentle, carefree nature made a lasting impact on everyone she knew.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Lynn Kilbourne; and son, Jason Lee Kilbourne; and her mother, Elizabeth King Whitener. She is also survived by her brother, Lynwood Whitener; sister, Julia Whitener Jones; Randolph "Bick" Whitener and Brenda Whitener; her beloved fiance', David Hainer; his children, Ryan and Audra Hainer, Hayley Hainer; and their granddaughter, Juliana Hainer.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Crape Myrtle Festival @CrapeMyrtleFest.org or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network @PanCan.org.
