Ted Thomas Obituary

Ted Thomas

November 5, 1957 - August 26, 2024

Ted Tyler Thomas, adored husband, father, and grandfather, was suddenly called to his heavenly home on August 26, 2024. While our hearts are heavy with grief, we find solace in the knowledge that he is in the embrace of Jesus and that we will be reunited with him one day. The outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received since his passing has been overwhelming and deeply comforting.

Born on November 5, 1957, to the late Charles "Brick" Thomas and Barbara Barton Thomas, Ted grew up in Colonial Beach alongside his brother, Eddie. He was blessed to spend 40 incredible years with the love of his life, Rebecca , whom he affectionately called "Boo". Ted and Rebecca's only daughter, Taylor Ragsdale, was Ted's best friend and worked alongside him at B&L Store. Her husband, Lance Ragsdale, has always been a son to them. One of Ted's greatest joys was being his granddaughter Jolie's beloved "Tootie." Ted was an outstanding baseball player, excelling as both a catcher and an outfielder. He earned a scholarship to UVA before transferring to Randolph-Macon College, where he played both baseball and football. For nearly 40 years, Ted owned B&L Country Store in Bumpass, VA, where he forged many lifelong friendships and became a beloved figure in the community. His legendary generosity and heart of gold touched everyone he knew. Ted was also a dedicated member of the Hanover Academy family, where he volunteered with unwavering commitment. His smile and kindness were always evident as he went out of his way to support the school in any capacity needed. An avid sports fan, Ted passionately followed the Boston Red Sox and the Dallas Cowboys. He was also a devoted fan of Jimmy Buffett, and his family fondly remembers the joy of listening to Buffett's music together, especially during family vacations. Ted's love for his family was profound, but his devotion to his Lord was even greater. He found joy in sharing articles with Biblical messages with friends of all ages and family.

Ted is lovingly cherished by his nieces and nephews, Ali (Andrew) (Wesley, Colton, Logan), Jack (Kiara), Dr. Christie Schmidt, M.D., Bailey (Preston), Daniel, Emily, Jason, Ethan, Ben, Amy, Rachel (Cliff) (Keller, Lyla, Jace); as well as his sisters-in-law, DeAnn Schmidt (James) and Terri Hunnicutt; and his brother-in-law, Tripp Hunnicutt.

A Celebration of Ted's life will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at First Baptist Church in Ashland, 800 Thompson St. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., with the service starting at 2 p.m. In honor of Ted, who was the original 'Parrothead,' please dress casually in bright and colourful attire. If you wish to make a donation in Ted's memory, reach out to Barrels of Hope International in Glen Allen, VA.

Our hearts are broken! We have lost a great friend and brother in Christ....Whether at Bible study with the guys or worshipping together on Sunday afternoons, he would always be the first to show love and compassion along with an eagerness to draw closer to Christ. He will be greatly missed! Sending love and prayers to his precious Rebecca and all the family. Our deepest sympathies....

What can I say about Ted except that I always said to him whenever I saw him, "My Teddy bear." He had such a gentle spirit and even bigger heart for all that knew him. There was never a growl from him in any manner towards anyone because his heart was so full of love....... Such a rarity in todays world! You are missed so much already and I know for your sweet Rebecca that she has been comforted by support of those that loved you ".Teddy bear." Til we see you in heaven.... We carry your love!

Ted was a generous supporter of our community in Bumpass, whether it was to raise awareness or funds for local events, to support spaying/neutering of pets, our local volunteer Bumpass Fire Department, or a hand-up to someone in need.
I can still see Ted standing on the porch of his store watching the annual fire department holiday Santa Run as it stopped in the road.
Sending up prayers of comfort and peace to family and friends.

Ted was one of my chemistry students at W&L HS in Westmoreland County, way back in the mid-seventies. He was one of those students that a teacher never forgets, a good student and an all-round great kid. He always called me "Miss P" and was one of the good ones. So sorry to read of his passing.

Ted will be missed by all of Bumpass always greeted me with a smile and occasionally a hug. He let me sell donuts outside off the store for softball fundraiser. I remember one hot day he came outside and said, "how much to purchase what´s let so you two can go home?" So he did just that. I remember how excited he was when Taylor was born. Sending all the prayers to his family. God bless
