Thomas Clevenger Obituary

Thomas Russell Clevenger, 74, died September 22, 2004, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Doris Johnson Clevenger; son, Matthew Clevenger and wife, Corinne, stepdaughter, Ashley, of Reston; son, Douglas Clevenger and wife, Ann of Medford, N.J.; grandsons, Christopher and Andrew; also his sister, Doris Brown of Lumberton, N.J. Dr. Clevenger served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War, then entered Rutgers University, where he graduated in 1956. He received a Doctor of Science degree from MIT in 1961, and was assistant professor at MIT. During this time, he took a leave of absence to accept a Ford Foundation Fellowship where he worked with the Matsushita Laboratories in Osaka, Japan. Following this, he joined Owens-Illinois in Toledo, Ohio in 1964 as a research advisor. In 1978, he was elected vice president, Owens Illinois, Inc. From 1981-1983, he served as president of Nippon Glass in Japan, a subsidiary of O.I., as well as vice president, Asia-Pacific. In 1983, he established TRC Associates, a consulting firm in Tokyo, later relocating to Akron, Ohio. The Clevengers moved to Richmond in 1994. In his retirement, Tom became a Master Gardener, and was active in the Chesterfield Cooperative Extension Service. He was a member of the Virginia Historical Society as well as a staunch supporter of Public Broadcasting, and a member of the Commonwealth Circle. Services will be held at the Episcopal Church of The Redeemer Saturday, September 25 at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bon Secours Hospice, and Virginia Cooperative Extension, Chesterfield, as well as to the Episcopal Church of The Redeemer.
