Thomas Rose Obituary

ROSE, Thomas Michael, passed away at VCU Medical Center on Saturday, February 25, 2023. He was born in Arlington, Va., on February 21, 1947, and grew up in Dayton, Ohio. Following graduation from the University of Dayton, he came to Richmond for employment at First and Merchants National Bank. He received an M.B.A. at Virginia Commonwealth University. After receiving his first pacemaker at VCU at the young age of 23, Tom saw every day as a gift and was always deeply indebted to his doctors at VCU for helping him to make it to age of 76. He felt fortunate and honored to be able to serve VCU as an employee for 35 years. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Fitzpatrick Rose and Joseph S. Rose; brother, Joseph Rose; sister, Susan; and his in-laws, Iva and Douglas Brannan. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Brannan Rose; sister, Bonnie George (Fred); brothers, Charles Rose (Jenny) and John Rose, all of Dayton, Ohio; as well as brother-in-law, Dr. Melvin Brannan (Jeanette) of Powhatan. The family would like to thank the VCU Home Hospice team for their dedicated and steadfast support during his last days especially Susan, Latoya and Paul. Services were private. If you wish to honor Tom's memory, please consider memorial contributions to VCU School of Medicine Annual Fund (www.support.vcu.edu/give/Medicine), the Richmond SPCA (richmondspca.org/how-you-can-help/donate) or Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad (tuckahoerescue.org/donate).

I knew Tom from back in the 70's shared a house with him for a while always low key but alert and engaged. Tom went missing for a few days ,we found out he had gone to VCU to have his pacemaker updated. No fuss no bother you would have thought he had gone for an oil change to his car. Loved rugby back in those days and followed the local club with a passion. Our condolences to Mary Ellen and other family members .

Tom was my boss for a short time at the University of Kentucky Medical School Dean's Office. I was his administrative assistant. I remember him telling me that he never had to worry that his wife, Mary Ellen, or I would ever have an ulcer because we shared any complaints with him that we had!!! He had that kind of sense of humor! I left in 1984 and every year since then, he remembered and sent me an email (and eventually a text) on my birthday and at Christmas. I know he loved his life in Richmond! He was a kind, funny and thoughtful man. My condolences go out to you, Mary Ellen.

I loved Tom Mike -- he always made me feel I was accepted into the family clan of " Fitzpatrick's" which at the time wasn't an easy undertaking. I will always hold him close in my heart. God bless and keep him. Amen.

Dear Tom's Family and Friends,
As a our Lady of Mercy and University of Dayton fellow classmate and fellow alumnus, Tom was a quiet, deep thinker who was always friendly to each of us. I am so glad we visited on the phone in February, so I could tell him how much he meant to all of us. May everyone's memories of Tom be sweet reminders of his gentle, loving spirit. We were blessed by his presence in our lives. Peace to all.

So very sad to hear of Tom´s passing. It was always good catching up at OLOM and CHS/JHS/St.Joe reunions. Tom was a good man and friend to many. Prayers for Tom and the family!

A friend and colleague at VCU, and occasional golf partner. He was funny, and stubborn, and most often right when it came to financial accounting. His car trunk and attic could fill a golf warehouse. RIP, TMR.
