Thomas Tanton, age 91, passed away peacefully on February 15th in Richmond, Va., surrounded by loved ones. Born on April 30, 1934, in Baltimore, Md., Tom lived a full and vibrant life rooted in love, service, and quiet strength.

Thomas was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Alexandra; his parents, George and Mary Tanton, and his brother, William.

A gifted athlete in his youth, Tom was a high school All Maryland lacrosse player and remained active throughout his life as an avid tennis player. His lifelong passion for sports extended beyond his own participation-he was also a respected football official, known for his fairness, dedication, and calm presence on the field.

Tom was a man whose charismatic personality left a lasting impression. His warmth, charm, and easy sense of humor drew people in, and nearly everyone who met him walked away loving him. Whether in conversation, competition, or community, Tom had a way of making others feel seen, valued, and at ease.

Above all, Tom was a devoted family man. He is survived by his four children, Thomas, Jr., Mary Theresa, Timothy Patrick, and Mary Alison and six grandchildren, each of whom felt the profound impact of his love, guidance, and enduring values. His family was deeply devoted to both him and their late mother, cherishing the home they built together and the countless memories they shared.

The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers who assisted Tom with compassion and devotion in the years before his passing, especially Kelly, Keisha, and Athena, whose kindness and dedication meant more than words can express.

A private family service will be held in his honor. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a youth sports organization or community initiative in Tom's memory.
