Timothy Bullis Obituary

BULLIS, Timothy Wayne, 52, of Midlothian died on July 5, 2023, taken too soon by colorectal cancer. Tim was surrounded by the love of family and friends in the days before his death.

A gifted, award-winning communicator with a passion for serving and leading others, Tim spent most of his career with Chesterfield County Public Schools. Straightforward, smart, thoughtful, funny and tireless: Tim Bullis improved the lives of thousands of students, educators, and community members.

While building a career of consequence, he also built a family with his wife of 23 years, Andrea Jaureguizar Bullis; and their children, Victoria Anne Bullis, Andrew Tyler Bullis and Alexandra Grace Bullis. The Bullises made lasting memories during beach vacations, holiday gatherings and other family get togethers. Competitive, possibly to a fault, Tim believed in winning, whether golfing with friends or whether his opponent was just 6 years old and the game was HORSE.

Born in Richmond on April 10, 1971, Tim graduated from Douglas S. Freeman High in 1989 and Randolph-Macon College in 1993. With family roots in journalism (late grandfather Jennings Culley is in the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame for his writing), Tim spent the first few years of his career reporting and editing for the Winchester Star newspaper. His love for journalism and sports intersected as Tim finished his newspaper career in Fredericksburg as the assistant sports editor at the Free Lance-Star. Moving into school communication, he worked first for Williamsburg-James City County schools, then joined Chesterfield County Public Schools in 2005.

Within Chesterfield schools, Tim rose from assistant director to director to executive director of communications and community engagement. As his responsibilities expanded, one ongoing role made him a bit of a celebrity: Whenever snow seemed possible, Chesterfield students, families and teachers looked forward to receiving school-is-closed messages from Tim. Teachers wore custom T-shirts declaring "Keep calm and wait for Tim Bullis to call" and "Tim Bullis is my (stay) homeboy," and students recorded videos encouraging Tim to make the snow day call.

While some aspects of serving as the chief communicator for central Virginia's largest school system were less joyful, Tim's problem-solving, his inclusive approach and his skill at crafting messages helped Chesterfield schools find success with bond referendums and navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. After almost 20 years as a fierce advocate for K-12 public education, Tim left Chesterfield schools in 2021 to work for Randolph-Macon College as executive assistant to the president. At his alma mater, Tim sought to ensure that every RMC student had the opportunity to experience success.

Throughout his life, Tim lifted people up. That was true for family, for friends, for colleagues and for the nonprofits where he volunteered his expertise and leadership (including the Midlothian Family YMCA, Shepherd's Center of Chesterfield and Chesapeake Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association). Tim's steady approach to leadership and mentorship will be missed.

In addition to his wife and children, Tim is survived by his parents, Wayne and Pam Bullis; sister, Amy Buck, her husband Jason and their daughters Rebekah, Bethany, Willow and Ashley. He also leaves behind his in-laws, Mike and Marcia Jaureguizar, brother-in-law Steve Jaureguizar, his wife Debbie and their children Nathan and Gabriella.

A private funeral service for family will take place at Trinity United Methodist Church on Friday, July 14. Friends, family and colleagues are invited to a celebration of life service at the Thomas R. Fulghum Conference Center at the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center (13900 Hull Street Rd.) on Saturday, July 15 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Tim's memory to one of the organizations he believed in: Randolph-Macon College, Communities In Schools of Chesterfield, Midlothian Family YMCA or Shepherd's Center of Chesterfield.

It's the first snow storm of the year, and I thought about you. We really miss those humorous calls informing us of school closings. We looked forward to your emails that said exactly what we were thinking. You left a great mark on CCPS. Rest peacefully:)

Like many, I always appreciated hearing Mr. Bullis' voice letting me know that CCPS was closed for a snow day. Even more, I appreciated the time I spent with his mother Pam when she volunteered as a cuddler at the hospital, listening to her share stories about Tim and his family. She would share about how hard he worked at his job and how much he gave to his family. I could tell Pam was incredibly proud of her son. Blessings to all of you in this time.

Dear Andrea and kids, he held Gods hand and together they walked that beautiful path towards the very Heaven God promised him. He fought like TimBullis always fought for anything he ever wanted and he never wanted anything more in his life than he wanted to remain with you. God saw this and explained to him how it was his time to receive God's rewards for his well fought battle and that he had not lost because one day he would again one day be joined with you four and this time , in perfect form. TimBullis, what a person. Such a child of God. What a mentor, leader, co-worker (if you were lucky) and friend. You were blessed to be his family...he was blessed to be yours. Your blessings will continue and will be watched with love from above.

Dear Andrea... I went through all of my photos trying to find pictures of Tim. He was always behind the scenes in his always humble presence. I did find a few more... one from ACTS and one from the faith leaders....plus a few more. I hope they give you comfort as you look back on his phenomenal time with Chesterfield. Sending love, Donna

Some of my fondest snow-day memories include waiting for the CCPS call...I always let it go to voicemail because I knew Tim would have a message that would be witty, and my children would want to play it over and over again. I´m grateful I saved some of those messages ... we listened to them yesterday as I shared the news of Mr. Bullis´ passing with my now teenagers. Our hearts go out to Mrs. Bullis (teacher at my children´s old elementary school) and the family. We are praying for you.

I hired Tim at The Winchester Star 30 years ago. He was a feisty young man who was a challenge to edit (in a good way). He was open to you changing his work, as long as you could prove you were making it better. When we each made the transition to school public information, he became a valued colleague. I will miss our talks at NSPRA. God bless Tim and his family.

Tim was always helpful and willing to share his knowledge and expertise as a guest speaker in the Center for Mass Communications. Students loved learning about his job and always had questions about his infamous snow day messages.

Tim was so much more than the spokesperson for CCPS. He was a strategic problem solver, great team leader and a caring listener. Tim put others before himself and was a gift to the school division and with everyone he worked with.

Tim was such a gentle man. Always had a hello for anyone and a smile.
He wasn't a bad dancer with New Dimensions, either.
He and I would exchange "snow" predictions through emails. It was a lot of fun.
He will be greatly missed.
Keeping the family and friends in my thoughts.

My condolences to Tim´s family.
As a driver we always waited with baited breath for the phone to ring and the sound of his voice.
His humor and wit was a joy to hear on those inclement weather days.
The creative message was as important as the information he delivered.
Rest in Peace Tim

My heart and prayers go out to the Bullis family tonight. Tim passed away this morning from colorectal cancer. He was an amazing leader, advocate for students and teachers, and the steady voice of reason for anything happening in Chesterfield. Snow days were a bonus with Tim... his personality came out via videos and calls!

Here was a post that I dedicated to Tim during my retirement countdown. Words cannot adequately express how deeply sorry I am. Tim was loved by all.

I can only imagine God speaking proudly, "Well done good and faithful servant. Well done."
