Walther Maser Obituary

Walther George Maser

October 1, 1929 - November 2, 2025

Walther George Maser, better known as "Bob", died peacefully on November 2, 2025 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walther George Maser and Edith Brockwell Norfleet; and his step-father, John Ballentine Norfleet; and his first wife, Sally Evans Wales Maser. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Elizabeth Lytle Maser; his children, Walther George Maser III (Brenda), John Hobson Maser (Pam), and Katherine Maser Martin (Tim); and his stepsons, Charles E. Bradshaw III (Clare) and Ryan Foster Bradshaw (Genevieve). He was a beloved granddad to his eight grandchildren, John Hobson Maser Jr. (Stephanie), Christopher William Short-Maser (Chip), Sarah Elizabeth Maser, Andrew Fleming Maser (Mary Hamlin), David Wales Maser, Sally Evans Pierce (Devin), Timothy Rives Martin Jr., and Ann Dabney Martin; as well as six great grandchildren, Lennon Headlee, Aurelia Maser, Hobson Maser III, Annie Short-Maser, Robert Pierce, and William Pierce.

Bob was born in Norfolk, Va. on October 1,1929, named Robert Brockwell at birth and nicknamed "Bobby". Due to the death of his father when Bob was four months old, he was renamed Walther George Maser but kept the nickname "Bob" for life. He graduated from Woodberry Forest School in 1948. It was there at a dance that he met Sally, his first wife of 39 years. Bob then attended the University of Virginia for one year until his appointment to the United States Naval Academy, where he was an exceptional hurdler on the Varsity track team for four years and graduated in 1953. Following his service in the Navy, Bob went to work at Reynolds Metals. He then started with a small unknown company, JC Wheat and Company, which later became Wheat First Securities, where he was one of the first 20 employees. A successful 42 year career followed in which Bob moved from broker to Richmond branch manager to ultimately the regional sales manager of 70+ offices.

Bob will be remembered for his love of family and his friends, his time spent at Virginia Beach and on the golf course, his quick wit, his remarkable ability to recall facts and details, and his steadfast concern for others. He will also be remembered for his love of sweets, especially pies, cookies and ice cream. Bob was the quintessential Southern gentleman.

A graveside Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 7th at 12 p.m. at Hollywood Cemetery, 412 S Cherry Street. The family would like to thank the staff and care team at Cedarfield for their compassionate and loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Woodberry Forest School, the Virginia Home, or a charity of your choice.

Katherine, I'm so sorry to hear this. I have a vivid picture of your father in a comfy chair, with a small (glass? ceramic?) egg in his hand - swirling it and swirling it - as he watched TV. Sending warm thoughts. Sally
