Wayne Hypes Obituary
Wayne Moore Hypes, 84, died Thursday, June 9, 2005, at his residence. He was born November 29, 1920, in Sinking Creek Valley in Craig County, Va., the son of James Watson Hypes and Laura Beatrice Trenor (Trixie) Hypes. Mr. Hypes grew up on a farm in Craig Co. where he graduated from Maywood High School. He was a 1941 graduate of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. degree in Agriculture Engineering. He served four years in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, and then served in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in 1980. He was employed as a soil and water conservationist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in North Carolina and Virginia for 40 years. He believed in conserving our soil, water, forests, wildlife and protecting our environment for future generations. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Staunton where he taught Sunday school, was a superintendent of the Sunday school and served as an elder. He was a cub scout and boy scout leader for 21 years and received the Silver Beaver Award in scouting. He married Carolyn Audrey Shackelford of Statesville, N.C. on November 16, 1946, at the First Presbyterian Church in Statesville, N.C. They were married for 59 years and had two children. He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Audrey Shackelford Hypes; two sons, Dayton Wayne Hypes and his wife, Karen Palmer Hypes, of London, Ontario, Canada, and Trenor Lee Hypes and his wife, Margaret May Hypes, of N. Charleston, S.C.; four grandchildren, Adrienne Grier Hypes of Grafton, W. Va., Jordan Dayton Hypes and Courtney Leigh Hypes of London, Ontario, Canada, and Alexander Trenor Hypes of N. Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, John William Hypes and his wife, Nancy Midyette Hypes, of Harrisonburg, Va., and C.D. Hypes and his wife, Harriett Farrier Hypes, of New Castle, Va.; one sister, Jean Price Hypes Bane and her husband, William Bane, of Pearisburg, Va. A memorial service will be held 11:15 a.m., Monday, June 13, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. Frederick St., Staunton, conducted by Dr. Richard S. Dietrich. Honorary pallbearers will be the coffee club of Kathy's Restaurant. Following the memorial service, the family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall. Interment will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 13, 2005, at Thornrose Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Watt Hypes, Webb Hypes, Roger Burleson, Bobby Dayton, Doak Bane, Rodney Williams, Alexander Hypes and Jordan Hypes. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church or charity of choice. Arrangement by Hamrick Funeral Home.
