Waynne Dunbar Obituary

DUNBAR, Waynne Page Boyden, 87, of Midlothian, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 23, 2023. This would have been the 65th wedding anniversary for her and her dear husband, Alvin Webb "Pete" Dunbar, who predeceased her on December 15, 2015. Her family is uplifted to think that they celebrated this one together. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Charlotte Emma Warren Boyden and Calvin James Boyden and brother Warren. She is survived by her children Diana Dunbar Place and husband, Brooks; her son, Craig Dunbar and wife Slater; grandchildren, Page, Marlee, Holt and Emma; and great-grandchildren, Xavier, Remy and Ryan. Waynne was born in Richmond, Virginia, was a 1955 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and attended Longwood College where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She created many life-long friendships during her school years; adding many other treasured friends along the way through her volunteer, community and tennis related activities. She and Pete were at every game or swim meet that their children participated in, cheering for the teams and working on the sidelines. She was a true friend and a supportive parent. Known for her poems and scavenger hunt rhymes to celebrate birthdays and holidays, her wit was quick, her smile adoring and her laugh infectious. Interment will be private. Any donations in Waynne's memory can be made to Trinity Episcopal School, 3850 Pittaway Rd, Richmond, VA 23235. Waynne and Pete Dunbar were instrumental in the initial design and establishment of the school and remained contributors long after their two children and three grandchildren graduated.

Craig, We were sorry to learn of your Mother's passing--as with many of our friends, we lost touch over the years--however, I remember that she and your dad were always there--cheering for you. Our sympathies to you and Dianna.

Your mom was the first person outside of my family to encourage my interest in folk music. When I was still a teenager, she gave me a John Jacob Niles songbook and a big book of ballads. I learned many a song out of them! She often asked me to sing for her. Now those books have a place of honor on my bookshelf. Your parents were both very special to us. Sending love to you and gratitude for all of the generosity and love that the Dunbars have added to our lives over the years.

So sorry for your loss Craig and Diana. Your parents were so instrumental in Trinity's early days. Saw them at so many of your ball games! It was a privilege for me to be a part of those early Trinity years. I am sure they are proud of the great school Trinity has grown into as they begin their 51st year. The Dunbar family is among the few "first families" of the school.

We lost touch over the years. We always called each other "cuz" whenever we saw each other at swim meets, or our family reunions in Surry. We came from good stock and our parents were close. That lunch that we were always going to have never quite materialized, and now I´m sad about that. RIP Waynne Page.
