William Beatty Obituary

BEATTY, William Leslie, age 84, of Lawrenceville, Va., passed away peacefully at McGuire Comfort Care on November 5, 2021. He was born on September 17, 1937, to Stella Wolf Beatty and Samuel Jamerson Beatty in Crewe, Va., where he was born and raised. As a child, he worked on the family dairy farm. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1961. Serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he was stationed in Germany and Fort Carson Co. and worked in the Transportation Division. After the military, Leslie drove a truck for Virginia Carolina out of Martinsville, Va. He worked for Southern States Cooperative and E.E. Vaughan and Son and returned to Southern States again, where he retired. After retirement, he drove a truck part-time for Colonial Truck Sales in Richmond, Va. He loved trucking, his animals and farming at his farm on County Pond Road, where his youngest son resides now. Another passion of Leslie's was cooking stew with Alvin Lucy and becoming a Brunswick Stew Master. He has been a member of Liberty Church since 1997, where he was a trustee and served as finance chairman and a member of the Central Brunswick Ruritan Club since 1975. In 1994, Leslie had a heart transplant at McGuire VA Hospital in Richmond and was the longest living heart transplant for 27 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie Tharpe Beatty; and is survived by his two sons, Bill Beatty and wife, Marilyn and Greg Beatty and wife, Cindy; his grandson, Matthew Beatty; his sister, Sarah Monopolous of Hudson, N.C.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and half-siblings. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, at Liberty Church, Lawrenceville, Va. The family will receive friends Saturday, from 10 to 11 a.m., one hour prior to the service, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Brunswick Ruritan Club, 3495 Liberty Road, Dolphin, Va. 23843 and/or to Liberty Church, c/o Jean Browder, 3827 Planters Rd., Lawrenceville, Va. 23868.
