William Allen Collins
January 26, 1940 - December 5, 2025
Lieutenant Colonel (RET) William Allen "Al" Collins, 85, passed away on December 5, 2025, in Fredericksburg, VA.
A proud veteran and lifelong Virginian, Allen's life was marked by dedication, resilience, and a deep commitment to service.
Born on January 26, 1940, in Richmond, VA, Allen earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Richmond.
A devoted fan of the Richmond Spiders, his connection to his alma mater remained strong throughout his life.
Allen served honorably in the United States Army for 22 years, completing two tours in Vietnam and rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His leadership and patriotism left a lasting impression on those who served alongside him.
After retiring from the military, Allen returned to Ideal, VA, where he built a home next to his childhood house-laying each brick himself over two years. This personal project was one of his proudest achievements and a tribute to his craftsmanship and family roots.
He later worked at Fort A.P. Hill before owning and operating a local auto dealership with integrity until its sale in 2002.
In retirement, he continued giving back as a substitute teacher and volunteer with the Rappahannock Community Services Board (RACSB), roles that allowed him to support others' growth and well-being.
Allen enjoyed gardening, hunting, cheering for the Spiders, and advocating for mental health awareness. He is remembered by those who knew him as both tough and compassionate-with a quiet kindness that left a lasting impact.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Collins; daughter, Mary Sullivan (Jim); sons, Steve Collins (Beverly) and Tom Collins (Jessica); brother, James Bernard Collins Jr.; sister, Margaret Ellen Collins; niece, Anastaci Rozday; and six grandchildren, Calley, Peter, Sean Sullivan, Miller, Neal, and Annabelle Collins.
He was preceded in death by his son, William Allen Collins Jr.; daughter, Anne Collins Stevens; and sister, Linda Blehm.
A family visitation will be held on December 13, 2025 from 2 to 4 p.m., at Storke Funeral Home in Bowling Green, VA. The family request casual attire.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the RACSB:
