William Colombell Obituary

William (Bill) Edward Colombell

William (Bill) Edward Colombell found peace and passed away on September 23, 2024. Born in New Haven, CT to Irish and German immigrants, Bill spent his youth delivering papers and stocking shelves at First National Supermarket. It was there he met a beautiful young cashier, Patricia Callahan, who would later become his wife.

After high school, Bill spent two years as a Jesuit seminarian before leaving to finish his education at Fairfield University and reconnect with the love of his life, Pat. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in June. Bill went on to UConn School of Law before joining the FBI as a Special Agent in 1965. He spent the next three decades working cases that shaped the political landscape, speaking his mind and impacting the lives of many.

Bill and Pat raised five daughters together, instilling in them the work ethic, strong will, profound faith, duty to family, and sense of humor befitting of a Colombell. Bill's love for his family, and the sacrifices he made for them, were unparalleled. He took great joy in supporting his daughters and grandchildren in their various activities; sporting events and graduation ceremonies alike marked with a resounding, "PAPA C!" – a well understood reference to his own father, meant to remind us of our roots. He loved his sons-in-law as sons, and as his family grew, so did his pride in us. His identity as a Catholic, and his unshakable faith, gave him immense comfort throughout his life and through his last moments with us.

In 1991, Bill fulfilled a lifelong dream of buying a beach cottage in the Outer Banks with his sister, Cathy. The house, since named "Papa Sea," is a haven for his family and part of his legacy. He was happiest at the beach and on many trips to his homeland of Ireland where he maintained close relations.

Bill faced life itself with open arms and a huge heart. He is the hero in his family's many stories, and his legacy grows clover green. For years, Bill would end phone calls with his loved ones with the phrase, "I love you more, and I've loved you longer." For now, we reply, "until we meet again."

Bill is survived by his wife, Patricia; their daughters, Beth (Carey Nemeth), Trish (Scott Keeton), Katie (Mike Stockhausen), Laura (Curtis Marshall), Annie (Bill Kast); his grandchildren and great grandchild; his brother, Tommy; sister-in-law, Mary; sister, Ann; many nieces and nephews; cousins; and dear friends.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude for the compassion and care provided by the staff at Sunrise Villa - Tuckahoe, Serenity Hospice, and "Bill's team" of dedicated caregivers. Visitation hours will be held Friday, October 4th, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at Bliley's Funeral Home, located at 3801 Augusta Avenue in Richmond, VA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, October 5th, at 9 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church, located at 105 South Snead Street, in Ashland, VA.

In lieu of flowers, we welcome your prayers and love. Any donations in Bill's memory may be made to Serenity First Hospice, 4915 Fitzhugh Avenue Richmond, VA 23230.

We are so sorry for your loss. It was about a year ago when Bill called Pete in Florida to check up on him. Pete passed away on February 26, 2024. He carpooled to the FBI building for work the first years of our marriage. Pete always came home with sweet stories about his girls. The world will miss his kindness and wonderful spirit. RIP.
