William Whiting Lyon

November 3, 1945 - September 6, 2024

William (Bill) Whiting Lyon passed away peacefully at home in Longwood, Florida on September 6, 2024, at the age of 78.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Marianne Serros Lyon, along with his three stepsons, Nick (Jen) Rapp, Mark (Alexis) Rapp, and Chris (Karen) Rapp, and his four grandchildren, Alex and Kate Rapp and Xavier and Florian Rapp. He is also survived by his sisters Marian Boye and Ginger Lyon, his stepsister Kim Skyelander, stepbrother Bill Hattendorf and brother-in-law Phil Barney, niece Megan (Ben) Boye and his nephew Dylan (Sumi) Boye and great-nephew Ravi Boye.

He is preceded in death by his parents Bayard Lyon and Wynne Wolf Lyon and stepmother Nancy Cross Lyon, and his sister Laurel Lyon and brother-in-law John Boye.

Bill was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 3, 1945. He was active in Boy Scouting and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Lyons Township High School and graduated from Earlham College with a psychology degree. After earning a Masters Degree from UNC in Public Health, he went on to spend 30 years working as a Data Analyst at McGuire VA Hospital in Richmond, VA. He was a master of the Excel spreadsheet.

Bill met his wife Marianne in Richmond, and they had been married almost 25 years. Together they welcomed their four wonderful grandchildren. They recently moved to the Orlando area and lived minutes away from all three sons and their families. Bill and Marianne were truly blessed to have family so close.

Bill was known as Runner Bill, running almost every day. He participated in many races, including a marathon and a triathlon. He was also known as Mr. Weather Channel. He could tell you the direction of the wind by degrees and the speed of the wind, learned from his many years enjoying his favorite sports of sailing, boating and snow skiing. He will be remembered for his strong bass voice in the Richmond Choral Society, Society Singers and The Brandermill Choir. He sang for these groups for over 30 years each. He loved volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, The Brandermill Church ministries and going on mission trips. He was generous with his talents, and his time with family, friends and the community.

Service for Bill will be held on September 21st at 2 p.m. at The Brandermill Church in Midlothian, VA. 4500 Millridge Pkwy, Midlothian, VA 23112.

So sorry to hear of Bill´s passing. Just happened to see on FB of this as was notified of his birthday. I worked at the VA and knew Bill as a colleague and got to know him more as a training partner in the VA Leadership Development program. He was such a great individual and truly enjoyed learning and studying along with him and our other partner Marilyn. He will surely be missed. Please accept my condolences. He also lived in my neighborhood and I would sometimes run into him while walking my dog.

So sorry for your loss Marianne and family. We knew Bill initially through skiing and the ski club. We´ve had many a fun time skiing & windsurfing together. Many fond memories of a fun, loving guy! So grateful we knew him as a friend. Thinking of you and your family at this difficult time.

I´m so sorry to hear of Bills passing. In my last few years of working at the VA, I would often eat lunch with a small group including Bill. Bill was of such kind and cordial demeanor that just talking to him was always a pleasure. As I know he will be greatly missed, may the memories of this really good guy forever be remembered.
