Mary Ann Sommers Larkin, 90, of Marysville, Ohio, formerly of Greenfield, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2021 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Marysville.
She was born July 12, 1930 in Greenfield, Ohio, the daughter of Clarence and Louise (Wright) Sommers.
In 1935, she moved with her family to Terrace Park, Ohio to be near her father's place of employment in Cincinnati. After World War II, she and her family moved back to Greenfield where she graduated from Edward Lee McClain High School in 1948. Following graduation, she attended the University of Cincinnati and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education in 1953. While attending U.C. she was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority, the honorary freshman Alpha Lambda Delta and the education honorary Kappa Delta Pi.
Her love of learning and children led her to pursue a teaching career in the Cincinnati Public Schools in the Princeton School District. She then returned to Greenfield where she taught a total of 18 years. A love of books and reading then led her to spending 15 years as branch librarian at the Greenfield Branch of the Highland County District Library.
In 1961, she married John Richard Larkin, Sr. They spent 50 years together on the beloved family farm.
She is survived by her son, John R. "Jay" (Theresa) Larkin of Marysville; two granddaughters, Taylor (Russell McElroy) and Rachel; four nephews, Rick (Lynn) Sellers, Dan (Dianne) Long, David Sellers and Tim (Aida) Larkin; two nieces, Allison (Larry) Davis and Katie (Kevin) Nugent; many great-nieces, nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews; and cousins, Ann Walker, Pat Free, Peggy Bach and Lois Roads. Special Larkin family cousins surviving, Fran Larkin and Kurt Hahn. Mary Ann was blessed with many friends and former students including Sarah Watts, Ruth Anna Duff, Barb Cook, Anna Lou Lucas, Shelly Twart and Betty Grubbs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Larkin, Sr., on July 17, 2012; two sisters, Harriett Sellers and Barbara Adams; one brother, David Sommers; and both parents.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 11 at the First Presbyterian Church in Greenfield with Pastor Mike Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Leesburg.
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Thursday at the Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield.
