Robert "Bob" McFarland, age 89, of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and family. He was born on Feb. 18, 1936, in Birds Run, Guernsey County, Ohio, the son of the late Lewis Edgar McFarland and Helen (Farnsworth) McFarland.
Bob dedicated 37 years of service to Ohio Bell, working in both Dayton and Hillsboro, where he was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and quiet dedication. Always eager to learn and grow, he attended DeVry University in Chicago, furthering his knowledge and skills in a field he truly enjoyed.
A man of deep faith, Bob was a faithful and devoted member of the Allensburg Church of Christ, where his commitment and steady presence reflected the values he lived by every day. He was also proud to be a member of the Highland Masonic Lodge #38 F&AM and the Lynchburg Masonic Lodge #178 F&AM, valuing the fellowship and brotherhood found within those organizations.
Bob had many interests that brought him joy throughout his life. He was an active member of the Highland Amateur Radio Association (HARA), a life member of the Harley Owners Group (HOG), and a member of the Honda Gold Wingers Association. Known as a master tinkerer, Bob could fix just about anything and found great happiness working with his hands. He especially loved classic cars and anything with an engine, living by his favorite motto, "He who dies with the most toys wins."
Above all else, Bob was a devoted family man. As a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, his greatest pride and joy came from time spent with those he loved. His wisdom, humor, and unwavering love will continue to live on through his family, who meant everything to him.
Bob is survived by his two sons, Randy (Tammy) McFarland of Hillsboro and Steve (Sandy) McFarland of Hillsboro; three grandchildren, Matt (Kayla) McFarland of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Josh (Chrissy) McFarland of South Salem, Ohio, and Katie (Bobby) Nilson of Virginia Beach, Virginia; six great-grandchildren, Riley McFarland, Wyatt McFarland, Iya McFarland, Charlotte Nilson, Chase McFarland, and Jetson McFarland; two sisters, Barbara Williams of Coshocton, Ohio, Janet Shuck of West Lafayette, Ohio, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carol McFarland on Dec. 30, 2022, and a brother, Larry McFarland.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, 2025, at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Masonic Lodge services will be held at 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home and funeral services will follow. Burial will take place in the Barnes Cemetery following the services.
