Virginia Elnora (Niswonger) Wilmer, formerly of Hillsboro, 103, passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022, at Vancrest Health Care Center in New Carlisle, Ohio.
She was born in Germantown, Ohio, on Feb. 19, 1919.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Obidiah Worthington Niswonger and Mildred Mae (Peiffer Niswonger) Courtney; her husband, Lee M. Wilmer; her brothers, Carl "Bud", Robert and William Niswonger and Richard Van Skoyck; and sisters, Hattie Young and Wanda Fritz.
Virginia is survived by her family, all of Ohio, sons, David (Joyce) Wilmer and Barry Wilmer, both of Fletcher; daughter, Jill (Wayne) Reffner of Hillsboro; six grandchildren, David Jr. (Jenny) Wilmer of Piqua, Dawn Covault of Troy, Lisa (Brian) Roberts of Piqua, Chad (Andrea) Wilmer of Wapakoneta, Wendy Ingle of Troy and Lonny (Amy) Wilmer of St. Mary's; 19 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
On Nov. 6, 1937, Virginia married Marion Leo Wilmer (Lee) in Richmond, Indiana. They made their home in Dayton for several years and then Huber Heights where their three children were raised. She was an amazing mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Virginia doted on her family and was happiest when family came to visit. She was always a source of positivity, opinionated on occasion, full of grace and kindness. We are forever grateful for her life and the memories we share. She was loved by many and will be truly missed.
During her life Virginia belonged to numerous organizations: Fraternal Order of Eagles, Dayton Senior Citizens Center, Kettering Recreation Center, secretary of the Golden Squares Dance Club and Matinee Mainstreamers, to name a few.
Her hobbies and interests included playing euchre and 500 rummy, fishing, traveling, square and ballroom dancing, quilting and hosting family gatherings. On TV she enjoyed watching "Wheel of Fortune", the"Ohio Lottery", "Andy Griffith" and "Magnum PI". Definitely not sports! Her face always smelled like Oil of Olay, her secret to beautiful skin. Every pocket of her clothing contained a tissue. Although not an artist, she always doodled on paper and napkins. Every day her attire was "dressed for church" with her hair fixed and dress shoes on. Virginia loved children. They brought a smile to her face. She also loved houseplants, butterflies and animals of all kinds. She was FUN to be around!
The family would like to thank the staff at Vancrest in New Carlisle for their care and compassion during Virginia's stay. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Vancrest Health Care Center, 1885 N. Dayton Lakeview Rd., New Carlisle, Ohio, 45344, (Activity Fund).
Visitation will be held at Morton Whetstone Funeral Home in Vandalia on Monday, Dec. 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a service to follow at 1 pm. Burial at Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.
