Richard Ryan Obituary

Richard Andrew Ryan, age 77, of King of Prussia, passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2022. He was born on February 13, 1945, the son of the late Thomas and Sue (Matteucci) Ryan. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (McGee) Ryan for over 52 years. Richard was raised in Wayne, PA, where he and his family were members of St. Katharine of Siena RC Church. He was also a student at St. Katharine of Siena Parish grade school and high school, graduating in 1963. He furthered his education at Villanova University, graduating in 1967, and continued his graduate studies at Villanova to receive his Master’s in Counseling. He operated his own TV repair business before being hired by the Upper Merion Area School District in 1985. He dedicated 25 years to teaching at Candlebrook Elementary, where he used his infectious curiosity and humor to engage his fourth grade students until his retirement in 2010. Richard enjoyed science and engineering (he could make or fix anything), photography, flying lessons, horticulture, and music; he was a drummer for various bands that performed at weddings and local bars. Above all, he was tirelessly devoted to his family, for whom he never missed a sporting event or concert, provided support without judgment, and always found a way to make everyone crack a smile. Besides his wife Patricia, Richard is survived by 4 children, Jennifer Migliaccio (Mark), Shawn (Kimberly), Kathleen (Julian King), and Peter (Emily); 9 grandchildren who knew him as “Pop-Pop, (Sean, Matt, Sam, Ella) (Patrick, Finn, Maisy) (Sadie, Max); many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas “Tucker. Relatives and friends are invited to pay respects on Friday evening, October 28th, from 5:30-7:30 PM at the William A. Moore Funeral Home (708 Fayette St., Conshohocken), or on Saturday morning, October 29th, from 9-10:15 AM at Mother of Divine Providence Church (Allendale Rd., King of Prussia). Mass will commence in the church at 10:30 AM followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery in West Conshohocken. My dear Patsy, I can't tell you how sad I am for your loss of your beloved Rich. Although we didn't see each other too often as adults, my love for my cousins never diminished and I would love to see you again. My heart goes out to you and the kids.

I hope this message finds the family of Mr. Ryan.
Back to the school year of 04/05, I was blessed to have Mr. Ryan as my fourth grade teacher. I´m 27 years old now, and will always say that Mr. Ryan was my favorite memory of elementary school and one of my favorite teachers. Mr. Ryan was the teacher everyone wanted. He made class full of fun, laughter, and realism. I was always excited to go to school, when I had him. He made fun learning, he made learning feel real. "Mr.Ryan teaches like we´re in college!"-4th grade students would say. I mean, who can say they dissected owl throw up to find rat bones to then gluing it on a paper! I know I can, can´t say it for others...I´m also very certain my mom threw that away the second I brought it home (lol). One my favorite memories with Mr. Ryan, was when my school bus was passing his house, and you would see Mr. Ryan ready to "race" the bus. We all cheered him on, but unfortunately for him, the bus won. He never heard the end of that during that school day. Mr. Ryan was loved in the classroom and appreciated soon after when his students would move on to the next big thing. There was no other teacher like Mr. Ryan. Mr. Ryan was never forgotten in my many years of school and long after. I love getting together with old classmates and Mr. Ryan was always the first of many topics. He will so be missed by many, but my memories of Mr. Ryan will always be shared and cherished. My condolences to the Ryan family. You were so blessed to have an amazing man in your family. God bless to you all during this time of grief.

Mr. Ryan was an incredibly impactful teacher and role model. I think about him often as you seldom meet someone with such an enriched personality and kind heart. My thoughts go out to the entire Ryan Family.

Mr. Ryan is hands down my favorite person I have ever met and one of the most influential people in my life. Mr. Ryan was my 4th grade teacher but also my neighbor. He has been dropping everything to be there for me consistently for the last 20 years. I have never met anyone quite like him. He's a huge part of why I wanted to become a teacher in the first place, and my favorite person to talk to about teaching since I started my education program in college. Mr. Ryan was the kind of teacher who got to know you as an individual and you knew he would do anything for you. Never have I met someone more passionate about science, and although it was not a strong subject of mine my hand was raised constantly that year in science class because it was his class. He had high expectations, could make his students smile even when no one else could, and did whatever he needed to for us to succeed. When I had Mr. Ryan in 4th grade he began calling me a nickname no other person ever has or ever will be allowed to call me. He has addressed every yearbook note, letter, and graduation card to "Megles." I grew up living around the block from Mr. Ryan and it became a tradition of ours to have long chats outside to catch up every once in a while when he was outside when I walked through the neighborhood. This happened quite often over the years as Mr. Ryan is out in his garden or yard any chance he gets. On Halloween every year after 4th grade I would end up only getting as far as his house because we always had a lot to catch up on. Years after trick or treating I would walk over every Halloween to have our traditional talk. The first year I was away at college I found a voicemail on my phone Halloween night from none other than Mr. Ryan. At the time I was bummed I missed his call, but today I am thankful I missed the call that day, because to this day it is the first voicemail I have saved on my phone. He has always been one of the highlights of visiting home and always ready for a hug and an "Oh Megles."

I cannot even put into words how much I will miss him.

To this day, if I asked my 29 year old daughter Lisa, who her favorite teacher was it was always Mr. Ryan. He had a way of reaching every child. He found ways to make school fun and interesting.
The one thing I remember that she spoke the most about were the baby chicks that were hatched at the school. The kids loved it. Then poor Mr Ryan would have to take all the chickens back to the farm when they got too big. He was beloved by all his students.
