Benjamin Sturm Obituary

Benjamin Robert Sturm, born in Citrus Heights, Calif. on January 7, 1967, succumbed to the cancer he had bravely fought for the past year and went home to our Lord on December 22, 2023.

Having attended school in Vallejo and Fairfield, Ben lived most of his life in Vallejo, working for local moving companies but spending the last twenty-some years working for Albany Steel in Richmond.

As a child, Ben exhibited a creative imagination and a gift for drawing as he became a talented artist, using his hands to make unique metal sculptures and many artsy objects from a variety of materials. Ben's talents were not limited to visual art; he loved music and learned to play a "mean guitar," writing and singing his own remarkable lyrics.

Ben put little stock in what others thought of him, as he just enjoyed seeing and making people happy. His life philosophy was to live and let live, and with his heart of gold, he consistently showed love and concern for others, especially for his daughter, his grandchildren, with whom he loved to play, and his mom. There was a good bond between Ben and his coworkers and his boss at Albany Steel, as well as with his residential neighbors.

He loved the outdoors, and before his illness, Ben enjoyed hiking, bike riding and weightlifting, while his excellent mind delighted in learning about science and nature.

It was only recently that Ben showed interest in faith in God, and it has been the love, prayers, and support of his large family and his friends, and a deepening faith in the Lord that have carried him through an extremely difficult eleven months. Ben died at the home of his parents and is survived by his daughter Cassandra (Jesus) Sturm of Merced; his four grandchildren Ana, Miklo, Nora and Benzo Campos (Merced); his mom Elly and his father Bob Sturm of Vallejo; his sister Tamara (Jesse) Montoya of Livermore; His nieces Maddie and Maile; many cousins, "tantes en ooms" (aunts and uncles); and friends. Ben and his broad smile, his caring nature and creativity will be greatly missed by the many who knew and loved him.

There will be a memorial service for Ben on Saturday, January 6, at 11 a.m., at Twin Chapels Mortuary, 1100 Tennessee St., Vallejo, followed by a reception at First Presbyterian Church, corner of Nebraska and Amador Streets, Vallejo.Arrangements entrusted to the direction and care of Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo (707) 552-6696.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Ben's passing. We mostly knew each other as kids from church, and our families were very close. My sister and I often stayed with his family. All four of us, the children including Ben, did everything together - playing games, having meals, exploring, teasing each other, and of course, getting into trouble. I remember what an impressive athlete he was, always challenging himself to do better, as well as his constant curiosity and ccreativity.
But, my fondest memories are of the times he stood up for me when other kids were mean or left me out. I will never forget him for that and his sense of fairness that spoke of a depth well beyond his years.

I remember Ben from our childhood days at Cave Elementary School. He was a smart, fun-loving little boy who always looked after his baby sister.

Although I hadn´t seen him in decades, I am blessed that we were friends at least during that period in our lives.

My condolences to all his friends & loved ones. RIP, my friend.
