Dorothy Jean Brown, an educator who as a child unknowingly began the arduous civic process which became what is widely regarded as the first landmark civil rights case, and for more than three decades taught within the Vallejo City Unified School District, died after a lengthy illness Tuesday evening at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. She was 83 years of age.
As a young girl in Topeka, Kan., Dorothy began singing at the age of five in Church of God in Christ services throughout the city. She was so little that the pastors used to stand her on a small chair so that the parishioners could see her.
Later, she and her cousin, Jean Williams, walked miles to segregated elementary schools out of their neighborhood. This angered their uncle, Attorney Charles Bledsoe, so much that the two little girls were the catalyst for his filing of the original paperwork for what would become the landmark 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court case.
Bledsoe became the lead counsel in the legal team that eventually would include Thurgood Marshall. Dorothy was also the first African American to be a member of the Glee Club at Topeka High School and subsequently the first African American soloist for a Topeka High School Commencement in 1945.
Born in 1927 to Mr. Orville Fitzgerald and Mrs. Lessie Mae Fitzgerald, Dorothy wanted to become an educator from the time she was a child, and often spoke of how she would arrange her dolls and teddy bears to teach them various lessons as a little girl. She would later attend Washburn University on a vocal performance scholarship and receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1949.
After briefly moving to Fresno, Calif., she relocated to Vallejo when she heard of job openings and was hired over the weekend to report on Monday morning.
In Vallejo, she taught elementary education at several schools and also was moved with the greatest facility into school pageant production and choral director. She was well loved and would often sing her commands to her students like "Please sit down" in a beautiful and sweet second soprano voice.
While attending Church at All Nations Church of God in Christ in Vallejo, Calif., she met and eventually married Lewis F. Brown. In 1956, she worked tirelessly and diligently to help elect him as Solano County's first African American-elected official and Brown later became Solano County's first African American attorney at law.
In 1972, Dorothy contacted several of her sorority sisters throughout the area and spearheaded the quest for a local chapter of the first sorority of African American women. The chapter, which is now Kappa Beta Omega, honored her by naming her their first Basileus.
Kappa Beta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority annually presents one of the largest cotillions for young women, "Fashionetta," which every November presents young debutantes throughout the area and is in its 33rd year.
She was also a founding member of the Solano County Chapter of The Links Incorporated, and a member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a worldwide honor society for women in education.
Perhaps her most cherished gift was her membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, gifted to her by her husband and sons for Christmas 1987.
Dorothy received her Master of Education degree from Sonoma State University in 1975 in early childhood development and worked closely with various scholarship funds and education projects until shortly before her death.
As a founding member of Rescue Mission Church of God in Christ with her husband and dear friends Elder Moses Tyson and his wife, Billie Jean Tyson, she helped establish a scholarship fund for local young people to attend college.
She was one of the chairs of the National Education Foundation Scholastic Motivation Ministries for the International Church of God in Christ. She also served on the Mothers Board and at the time of her death was the Church Mother Emeritus for Rescue Mission Church of God in Christ.
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Lewis F. Brown; her sons, Lewis and Orville (Ricky) Brown; her grandchildren, Lathan, Jasmine, Lewis, Deja' and Giovanni; and her brother, Arnold of Flint, Mich.; and a host of relatives and dear family friends.
At her death Dorothy was a Ph.D. candidate who was preparing to work as an educational consultant focusing on the empowering of young women and men to be entrepreneurs as well as scholars. She believed that "anything you do, you can do it better with an education."
Wake services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 14, at Rescue Mission Church of God in Christ, 2701 Tuolumne St., Vallejo. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Old Path Miracle Cathedral Church of God in Christ, 500 Arkansas St., Vallejo.
Arrangements by Dan Scales Funeral Services Incorporated, 107 West 8th Street, Pittsburg, CA 94565.

Mother Brown was such a wonderful woman and inspiration in my life. There's not a day that goes by, that I don't think about something positive she said to me or a simple story she shared with me for encouragement.
Atty. Brown and family, I love you guys and you all will continue to be in my prayers.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his Saints. Mr. Brown, Lewis, Ricky and all the grandchildren, take comfort in knowing Mrs Brown is home. I have known your family all my life. My mom and Mrs Brown were great friends. I have been where you are and my prayers are with you. Mrs Brown was a woman of class and style, sprinkled with grace. She was serious about education; but, not so serious that she could not laugh. In my mind, I can hear her laughter and melodious singing voice. I am sure she saw familiar faces as she entered those pearly gates and one of those there to greet her was probably her good friend Lena saying welcome home! With all my love...

I am so sorry for your loss. Mrs. Brown will be missed by all who ever had a chance to know of her great presence. She opened plenty of doors for Vallejo children and for that I thank her. She was always very classy and will always be remembered for her tutelage.

I have learned only today of the passing of Mrs. Brown. It was also today that, for the first time, I have become aware of the rich history that was her life. I was only in direct day-to-day contact with Mrs. Brown for one year of my life. The year was 1969. I was in the third grade. Mrs. Brown was my teacher. She was also the first african-american teacher of my life and, because of that, I felt a kinship with her that I had not with other teachers. I also recall feeling a sense responsibility toward her as a student in her classroom. It wouldn't do to behave poorly under her watch or not try to impress her with the knowledge that she inspired me to seek and retain. There is no single lesson that she taught me that was life-altering. It was more a matter of her presence and what an admirable representative of my community that she represented. I feel that we are, to great degree, the sum of many parts of those who have come before us. Now, as I enjoy the blessing of 20+ devoted years with my own bride and watching our intelligent daughters grow, thinking of Mrs. Brown give me a warm sense of, "I am here because she was there." Thank you Mrs. Brown.

To the Brown Family: You all are dear to me. We have been friends a long time. Mother Brown always came to our Charity Church Vacation Bible School with her grands. She was a pleasure to talk with. I will always remember her for singing 'The Lord's Prayer' at my wedding over 50 years ago and she sang it again for Benny and I at our 40th Wedding Anniversary celebration. My prayer is that God comfort you in this hour.

A Reminiscence
YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.
May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.
Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;
To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

Mrs.Brown was my second grade teacher at Steffan Manor in Vallejo. She taught me to never judge people by the color of their skin and to have compassion for people. She will be greatly missed and Vallejo has lost one of the truly gracious and big hearted people who has ever taught in our school system.
Warmest thoughts and love go out to the family.

To Dad Brown and Family,
May God’s peace empower you during this time of promotion for Mother Brown to glory. Mother Brown greatly impacted everyone lives with words of encouragement, constructive criticism, and most importantly the Word of God, which enable us to remain steadfast and unmovable as ambassadors of Christ. Her smile and warmth was a couple of her characteristics that embraced us with love. Mother Brown will truly be missed; however, I know that we will meet again in heaven with her arms opened to embrace each of us. Proverbs 31: 10-31: Who can find a Virtuous Woman? We the family of Rescue Mission COGIC acknowledge Mother Brown as a Virtuous and Anointed Woman of God.
Much Love Your Daughter,

The emptiness of her favorite chair, the echo of the words once said, the still felt warmth of the smile that brought light to dark times. The mixed feelings of sadness but then a gladness of knowing that your lives once touched and will forever remain entwined. Although far away my thoughts are near as you strive to endure this difficult time.
