James Hollister Obituary

Well-known Vallejo physician James K. 'Doc' Hollister passed away August 8 after a brief illness at the age of 86.

He had had lived a full life as a dedicated doctor, enthusiastic public servant, and devoted family man.

A Vallejo resident since 1953, Dr. Hollister was a Kaiser obstetrician for over 30 years, retiring in 1984. He continued practicing medicine with the Solano County Public Health Department until shortly before his death.

While he was dedicated to and highly respected in his profession, Dr. Hollister was equally committed to public service. Hundreds of Vallejo youth knew him as 'Doc' - their coach, team manager, mentor and friend.

He chose to give his free time and energy to the youth of Vallejo, influencing their lives in many positive ways.

For more than 30 years, he served as the team physician for the Vallejo and Hogan High Schools and Solano Community College football teams, refusing compensation for these services and requesting that the funds be returned to the school's athletic departments for equipment or used for scholarships.

For more than 20 years, he voluntarily performed the physicals required of these and other schools' athletes in all competitive sports. He was also licensed as doctor for boxing matches and provided this service to the Police Athletic League boxing program.

For nearly 40 years, he coached and managed dozens of youth athletic teams including Vallejo Little League, Vallejo Babe Ruth and Senior Babe Ruth Leagues, Western Amateur Baseball, Joe DiMaggio League Baseball and Pop Warner Football. His sons were among the youth he coached at all of these levels. In the early 1990s, he assisted with coaching duties for the California Maritime Academy's baseball team. He also served on the Greater Vallejo Recreation District Board of Directors in the late 1970s and was inducted into the Vallejo Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

Dr. Hollister was a passionate advocate for and supporter of public education. His belief in the system spurred him to donate his time and skills whenever and wherever he could to enhance learning opportunities for students. He served as a guest lecturer at Solano College and the California Maritime Academy in a variety of subjects relating to health and reproductive biology. He was a charter member of the Solano Community College Governing Board, on which he served four terms, including terms as president of the board. He was instrumental in the establishment of the college district, the location and construction of the campus at Rockville, and the expansion of the college's curriculum and services to Vallejo residents. The football stadium and the Sports Medicine Center at the Rockville campus are named after him. He was inducted into the college's Hall of Fame in 1995.

A native of Fresno, CA, he completed pre-med studies at Fresno State College and earned his medical degree at George Washington University Medical School, Washington, D.C. He was certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Clinical Hypnosis, and completed special studies under the auspices of the American College of Sports Medicine. He was a member of the Solano County Medical Society and the California and American Medical Associations, as well as several subsidiary medical associations related to his specialty and special fields of study.

He was also a member of Elks Lodge No. 559 of Vallejo; Masonic Lodge No. 87, Royal Arch, Knights Templar; the Kiwanis Club of Vallejo; Native Sons of the Golden West Vallejo Parlor No. 77; Loyal Order of Moose Chapter 315; American Legion Post 550; Knights of Pythias Washington Lodge No. 7; Community Presbyterian Church; and other organizations. He was a former member of the Vallejo Lions and the Vallejo Jaycees.

Doc was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn, in 1996, but he and his family were blessed during the last eight years with the presence of his second wife, Patsy, with whom he shared many interests and good times. He is survived by Patsy, sister Lillian (Dave) Crockett of San Marcos, CA; his children and their families: daughter Leslie Hollister (Kelly Berger) of Auburn, CA, and her son David McWhorter of Vallejo; son James III (Karen) of Elk Grove; daughter Kerrie Dennis of Vallejo; son Patrick (Karen) of Benicia and their children Laura and Patrick; son Michael (Nekane) of Fairfield and their children Danielle, Megan and Aaron; and son Daniel (Holly) of Vallejo and their son Richard. He is also survived by hundreds of Vallejoans whose lives he touched in many wonderful ways.

A celebration of Dr. Hollister's life will be held at the Vallejo Elks Lodge, Thursday, August 28, at 3 p.m. Inurnment will be private.

A scholarship has been established at Solano College in Dr. Hollister's name. Contributions to the scholarship may be made in his memory by sending a check to the Solano Community College Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 2208, Fairfield, CA 94533.

To the Hollister Family;
I just want you to know that first of all I am praying for your strength in this time of suffering and would like to acknowledge that I had and will always have the ultimate respect and honor for "Doc" He delivered me at Kaiser in 1961, watched me grow up, respected me as a Coach and a Man, but most of all he never forgot who I was. The last time I spent with him was in the booth at Wilson Park while I was the Vice-President of Babe Ruth in 2003, he was as spry and sharp as a tack, and I remember wondering if he was just ageless.
My sympathy goes out to you all, I just lost my Brother (Rick) a few months ago who was also delivered into this world by your Dad. Just try to Remember that Weeping endures for a night but JOY will come again.

I Love you all,

David Pouncey Sr. & Family

What more can be said about such a great man? Doc was so many things to so many people. He touched all of our lives in ways we never realized until we reflect back now that he is gone. Doc delivered me, coached me, mentored me but most importantly he was my friend. I will miss him every day for the rest of my life.

Doctor Hollister, the best of the best. He signed my birth certificate in November of 1956. I met him again just two weeks shy of my 13th birthday when I was admitted to the hospital after being struck by a car. I was so afraid and in pain. He came in my room and said "I remember you, I signed your birth certificate. My mom laughed as she squeezed my hand and she told me that he delivered me. He taught me ways to deal with the pain and somehow he made a miracle happen. I was so afraid to stay alone and he made it possible for my niece who is 10 years younger than me to spend the night with me for the first few nights so I wouldn't be afraid. All these years later my niece still talks about the time she stayed 2 nights in the hospital when she wasn't even sick.
Thanks Doc for making something a 12 year old should never have had to experienced much easier.
My heart goes out to the Hollister family.

My sympathy to the Hollister family,

Doc's shoes can never be filled. He was one-of-a-kind and the world was a better place with him in it. Patsy and I started first grade together at Grant School and through her I had the privilege of knowing Doc. He always had a smile on his face and the classmates of VHS, class of '53 always looked forward to seeing him at our functions. I will miss him terribly but will always be grateful that Patsy and he had eight wonderful years together.

My love to all,

Jean (Pritchett) Pesce

My condolences to all of the Hollister family. I worked with Doc Hollister at Solano County for many years. He was a wonderful caring man. One time I asked him to hypnotize me to lose weight, I thought it hadn't worked, but 6 months later I had lost 30lbs. He was loved and respected by so many because of the kind of man he was. He will be sorely missed by so many. Good-bye Doc and rest in peace.

I remember the first time I met Doctor Hollister at Callen Field in 1974 when I was 9 years old, and I'll always remember my first Martini with him in 1985 at my 21st birthday party. You are a Vallejo legend. Thank you for all of your wonderful Hollister hospitality and your genuine care of everyone who came into your great attentiveness.

With love and respect.

This picture is worth a thousand words. It's one of my very favorites. This one image depicts Doc with Grandson Richard in 1991. Richard is the son of Dan and Holly Hollister. How many babies where held by Doctor Hollister in this same exact way over his wonderful lifetime...

Dearest Pat and Family,

If ever there was an angel who walked among us, it was your dear Jim. My late husband, John, had the privilege of working with Jim for several years at the Solano County Health Department. They went from being co-workers to becoming best friends.

There are two fond memories that I will always cherish. Your beautiful wedding reception will never be forgotten. Second on my list is walking into a local restaurant at the exact same moment as you and Jim. We joined each other for dinner and said our good-byes more than three hours later. What a lovely meal with wonderful company.

I know my John must have been on the welcoming committe in heaven and greeted Jim with a warm hug and handshake. They are two great friends that are now reconnected.

Good bless you and your family for sharing Jim with this world. What a remarkable person he was and how we all benefited.

With all my love and deepest Sympathy,

Bob Wolfe

Doc....I'll miss you. My fondest memory is being sent to you for my high school pre-football physical. Not realizing your background, I was puzzled while sitting in your waiting room surrounded by young pregnant women....physical went fine though I stuggled to understand what position the ladies would play for the Apache team....but then I was a lineman so my confusion was only natural.
Later, Jim and I became great friends and were roomies at UC Davis.....I cherished the continuing connection with you through him.
Thanks for all you've done for me. I'll never forget you.

My deepest sympathy to the Hollister Family.
I was fortunate to have Doc as my physcian for 10 years, he saved my life in 1972, having spent 11 days in the hospital, at Kaiser Hospital. I know he never slept in that time, spending hours reading up on my condition and on the phone to other Doctors in saving me. He also in those years was the coach for my sons Pop Warner football team and team Physcian. One of the greatest men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, Vallejo has surely lost an Icon. Too Docs family, thank you for sharing him all those years.
God Bless you Doc
