TERRENCE RYAN Obituary

Terrence Ryan a native of San Francisco was a long timelabor and political activist died on August 20, 2023 of lingering illness. Terry was what he proudly called a "card carrying" member of the Burton Machine. Those days, politics of the Burton's were closely aligned with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). In fact, former Mayor Willie Brown said that the headquarters of the Burton Machine was in the basement of the Janitors Union Hall at 240 Golden Gate Avenue. Terry ran the San Francisco Get-Out Vote operations to both Bobby Kennedy in 1968 and Jesse Jackson in 1988. He was also the Campaign Manager for Supervisor Joe Beaman in 1967. He was President of the San Francisco Federated Young Democrats and the Northside Democratic Club.He also served several terms on the San Francisco Democratic Central Committee and one term on the State Democratic Central Committee. He was an officer or staff for five different SEIU Locals in the Bay Area, including being elected as Financial Secretary for SEIU Local 400, the San Francisco city employees union. Terry was a difficult man to supervise as he carried very strong opinions of how workers should be treated, whether they were members he represented or staff he worked with. Terry was very interested in opera and the San Francisco History especially labor and maritime. Terry leaves a grieving widow of his third marriage to Dinah L. Villanueva-Ryan, a son Michael Ryan and only girl born to Ryan for over 100 years, granddaughter Erin Ryan, both from Seattle. Previously, he was marriedtwice to the late Betty Ann Clodfelter and late Marta Silvia Solotar. He leaves three brothers (not one of them as handsome as he is), Dennis & late Ginny Ryan of San Carlos, CA; Brendan Ryan of Brussels, Belgium, and late Kevin & Sandra Sanflippo Ryan of Pleasanton, CA. He also leaves several nephews, Matt & Melissa, Vince, Julian and Dominic; a niece, Andrea and numerous brothers in-law, sisters in-law and family friends. His remains willbe scattered in the San Francisco Bay with close family and friends on October 4, 2023 at 1:00pm on the Orca III boat. Berkeley Marina K dock. Rev. Dr. Tony Ubalde and Father Abe Alonzo will be officiating the service. All arrangements made by Skyview Memorial Lawn, Vallejo.

Terry was a union colleague, a neighbor, a City employee & retiree colleague, a good friend, a consultant and always a teacher. He rowed his own boat! But he was generous with his wisdom & time. He didn't fit any mold, either. Can't believe I can't pick up the phone or drive over afew blocks to contact him. He always had answers for my questions. A very unique person, as well. Could not imagine being his supervisor or manager! He was exceptionally bright. Few understood. The neighborhood folks liked Terry a lot, too. He was kind & considerate. He was also very tall & substantial so he was always easy to spot! His labor connections made him popular with service staff as he loved to eat out and well. His reputation preceeded him...in his neighborhood, his union, his workplaces, the SF Labor Council, the Democratic Party (many levels), & many City departments. He was truly unique. He was also highly respected for his mental acuity, his dedication to labor, and his willingness to share his knowledge and time with others. He has been greatly missed. But he has not been forgotten! I doubt he ever will be as he was that unique!

I met Terry as a fellow activist in the California Federation of Young Democrats and in activities and campaigns involving the Burton's. He was a great guy and a splendid raconteur. I remember well when he enthralled a room full of Young Democrats with his description regarding the special nature of politics in San Francisco. Tales of Phil and Johnny and Bob Burton, Willie Brown, Dave Jenkins, George Hardy,Harry Bridges, Joe Beeman.....the battles on behalf of working men and women...Civil Righrs and on and on. I have been privilege to have met Terry Ryan along the way...
