Availia J. Volkel, 86, of Hunlock Creek, passed away Friday, July 11, 2025, at Birchwood Rehabilitation and Healthcare, Nanticoke.
She was born in Springville, Pa., the daughter of the late Berton and Elizabeth Hummel Strait. Prior to retiring, Availia was employed as a Certified Nurse's Aide at various nursing homes, including Birchwood and Valley Crest.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Doran; brother, Duane Strait; and sisters, Elsie Kuryloski and Alice O'Borski.
Surviving are her children Doran Volkel, of West Pittston; Jean Lamoreaux and her husband, Dennis, of Hunlock Creek; Daniel Volkel and his wife, Rose, of Shickshinny; and William Volkel, of Lake Silkworth; sister, Connie Perkins, of Hunlock Creek; and 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday from Charles L. Cease Funeral Home, 634 Reyburn Road, Shickshinny. Interment will follow in Lateer Cemetery, Sweet Valley.
